John L. Smith

John Lenwood Smith, 80, of Cumberland, passed away November 22, 2023 at UPMC Western Maryland surrounded by his family.
He was born in Cumberland, on May 22, 1943, to the late George and Etta Smith Jr. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Rosalie Smith; a daughter, Theresa Smith; and two half-brothers, George and Joel Smith.
John attended LaSalle and then graduated from Allegany High School. He served in the U.S. Army and was a Vietnam War Veteran. He was retired from the Schmidt Bakery. John was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He loved skiing, golfing, hunting, fishing, and his cats.
Surviving are his daughters, Tammy Smith and Etta Smith; a son, Kevin T. Smith and wife Lisa; sisters, Carol Seal and Julie Owen; and brothers, David Smith and wife Inis, and Dwayne Smith and wife Brenda; along with an extended family including many nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Ave, Cumberland, on Wednesday, November 29, 2023 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. A funeral service will immediately follow beginning at 1:00 p.m. with his brother, David Smith, officiating.
Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens, LaVale, MD. Military honors will be accorded by Ft. Cumberland Post 13 Honor Guard.
