Mary E. Baker
September 24, 1937 - April 23, 2025 (Age 87)
Mary “Libby” E. Baker passed away on April 23, 2025, in Rock Hill, South Carolina, at the age of 87. Born on September 24, 1937, in Kingstree, South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late John “Vander” Hudson and Roberta Cook Hudson.
Mrs. Baker worked in reservations and customer service with Eastern Airlines before transitioning to a position in payroll with Allied.
A devoted advocate for veterans and a steadfast presence in her community, Mrs. Baker served as President of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and Chair of the Gold Star Mothers for York County. As an active leader of the York County Veterans Council, she organized and led the annual Memorial Day Celebration, demonstrating her deep commitment to honoring those who served our country. She was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary #2889, the York County Literary Association, and the Oakdale Baptist Church choir. In addition, she was a hospital volunteer called the Pink Ladies for several years. Her leadership, compassion, and organizational talents left a lasting impression throughout the community.
Rooted in her Christian faith, Mrs. Baker was a devoted member of Inspiration Baptist Church, where she also served as a Sunday School teacher. Her ministry extended into the community, where she frequently visited nursing home residents and supported a wide range of charitable organizations. Her life was marked by humble service and a desire to uplift those around her.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Henry Baker; her children, Timothy Horne and Christy Elizabeth Horne; her brother, John Hudson; and her brother-in-law, John Larry Smith.
She is survived by her loving sons, Michael Horne and his wife Lisa, and Charles Horne, both of Rock Hill, South Carolina; and her sister, Betty Ackerman of Alabama. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Candie Horne and her children, Kodi Martinez, Abigail Martinez, Declan Osborne, and Brooklyn Osborne; Caroline Horne; Bonnie McClinton and her children, Mattie, Caydence, and Jaxson; Chuck Horne of Kansas City, Missouri; Justin Horne and his wife Caitlin, along with their daughter Cali Horne of Pendleton, South Carolina; Wendy Horne Arceneaux and her husband Jordan of Charleston, South Carolina; and Somer Horne.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Greene Funeral Home Downtown Chapel, 355 E. White Street, Rock Hill, SC 29730.
