When it comes to honoring those who have served in the military, ensuring that they receive their entitled benefits is a significant part of that respect. Veterans and their families have access to a range of deathcare benefits provided by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Understanding these benefits can help you make informed decisions and ensure that your loved one is honored in the most respectful way possible.

VA Burial Allowance

The VA provides a burial allowance to help cover funeral and burial expenses. This benefit is designed to assist with the costs of a veteran’s burial in a private cemetery. The amount of the allowance varies based on whether the death was service-related or non-service-related.

The best way to learn all about your benefits from the Federal Government is through your local Veterans Affairs Office or online at va.gov.

Burial in a National Cemetery

Veterans, service members, and certain eligible family members can be buried in a VA national cemetery at no cost. This includes the gravesite, grave liner, opening and closing of the grave, a headstone or marker, and perpetual care of the gravesite.

  • Gravesite: The VA ensures that each eligible veteran receives a gravesite in a national cemetery. Veterans can also pre-qualify for burial to ensure space is reserved.
  • Headstone or Marker: The VA provides a government headstone or marker, even if the veteran is buried in a private cemetery. This includes inscription and placement.

Presidential Memorial Certificate

The Presidential Memorial Certificate (PMC) is a special honor bestowed upon deceased veterans, recognizing their service and sacrifice. This engraved paper certificate, signed by the current president, serves as a lasting tribute to the veteran’s memory. The PMC is available at no cost to the next of kin and loved ones, providing a meaningful memento that commemorates the veteran’s contribution to their country.

Military Funeral Honors

Eligible veterans can receive Military Funeral Honors, a solemn tribute that includes the playing of "Taps," the folding and presentation of the U.S. flag to the next of kin, and, when available, a rifle detail. These honors, provided by the Department of Defense, are a deeply respectful way to acknowledge the service of a veteran. The ceremony is available upon request and is provided at no cost to the family.

VA-Furnished Headstones, Markers, and Medallions

For those veterans buried in private cemeteries, the VA offers a government-furnished headstone, marker, or medallion at no cost. These symbols of honor are a lasting tribute to the veteran’s service. Families can choose from various options to best reflect the veteran's service.

  • Headstones and Markers: Available in granite, marble, or bronze, these can be placed in both national and private cemeteries.
  • Medallions: These can be affixed to an existing privately purchased headstone or marker, signifying the deceased’s veteran status.

Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC)

For families of veterans whose death was service-related, Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) offers crucial financial support. This tax-free benefit is available to the surviving spouse, children, or parents, helping to alleviate the financial burden that can follow the loss of a loved one. The DIC ensures that the sacrifices made by both the veteran and their family are honored and supported.

Survivors Pension

The Survivors Pension is a tax-free monetary benefit provided by the VA to help support the low-income, un-remarried surviving spouses and unmarried children of deceased veterans who served during wartime. To qualify, survivors must meet specific income and net worth limits, ensuring that the benefit reaches those most in need. The amount received is determined by subtracting the survivor’s income from the maximum annual pension rate set by Congress. Additionally, supplemental benefits like Aid and Attendance (A&A) or Housebound allowances are available for those who require extra care due to disability or confinement. These benefits help provide financial stability and peace of mind to the families of those who served.
