Frostburg, MD – Barbara “Bobbie” Ann Oster, 90, of Frostburg, MD, passed away Thursday, June 26, 2025, at her home.
Born June 12, 1935, in Cumberland, MD, Mrs. Oster was the daughter of the late James Jones and Kathleen (Haines) Jones. She was also preceded in death by her husband: Richard M. Oster; two sons: Christopher and Brian Swayne; brothers: Alexander and Gary Jones; and her sister: Louella “Pete” McKay.
Bobbie was a proud Fort Hill Graduate, and always worked, learning to make the worlds’ best fudge as a teenager at a candy shop in Cumberland. Bobbie was an early supporter of the modern computer age, employed by USF&G in 1954 in data entry. Bobbie drove for Garret County school district, taking her retired state police cruiser down roads school busses couldn’t navigate, getting students to and from school. She worked for 20 years at the S. Schwab Factory in quality control of the “Little Me” collection. She was a member and an administrative assistant of the Holy Cross Episcopal Church, creating the weekly bulletin. Bobbie was a two-time President of the Ladies Auxiliary of Post #13 American Legion, and was awarded the Maryland Hospital volunteer of the Year in 2008 for her support of veterans at the VA. She was an Assoc. Member of Henry Hart Post #1411 VFW, and was a driving force on the committee with the Gulf War Memorial in Cumberland. Bobbie was a tireless and expert cook who soldiered on into her 70s at hundreds of spaghetti supper or chicken dinner fundraisers. She loved shuffleboard, duck pin bowling, pizza night with Betty and Edie, poker and Scrabble. But most of all, she loved her family. As the mother of seven children, born in between 1954 and 1961, she never missed a ball game, performance, school event or PTA meeting.
Bobbie is survived by her children: Kathleen Grace and husband, Joseph; Adam Swayne and Vicky Brenneman; Glenn Swayne; Bruce Swayne and wife, Rhonda; and Martha Schadt and husband, Jonathan; her sister: Jeannie Camacho and husband, Henry; as well as 17 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
