Bernard "Bernie" F Strain

October 7, 1936 - April 24, 2021 (Age 84)

Cumberland—Bernard Francis “Bernie” Strain, 84, of Bel Air, Cumberland, passed away on Saturday, April 24, 2021, at UPMC Western Maryland.

Born in Amsterdam, New York, he was the son of the late Cecelia (Wood) and Charles H. Strain. In addition to his parents, Bernie was preceded in death by his brothers, James, Edmund, and Richard; sister, Virginia Weaver and husband, John; mother and father-in-law, Armetta and Gerald Bull.

Bernie was a graduate of Amsterdam High School. Following high school, he attended Hudson Valley Technical School. He then served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps. After being discharged, he was employed at the United States Geological Survey for 38 years.

Bernie loved baseball. He loved coaching kids, especially his kids. In retirement, he enjoyed woodworking and gardening. Bernie enjoyed most of all, decorating for the all the holidays. Being a New Yorker, Bernie was an avid New York Yankees baseball and New York Giants football fan.

Bernie is survived by his wife of 55 years, Donna Jean (Bull) Strain; children, Charles J. “Chuck” Strain and Debra Kisamore, Kimberly A. “Kim” Collier and husband, Donald, Donald F. “Donnie” Strain and wife, Sherry, and Stephen G. “Steve” Strain and wife, Jessica; grandchildren, Clayton Strain, Morgan Collier, Bryce Collier, Trent Strain, Eli Strain and Lexi Grimm, Liberty Strain, Alora Hamden, Everett Strain, Skye Strain, and Isla Ford; great-granddaughter, Kylen Strain. Bernie is also survived by many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

Due to health care considerations, Bernie’s services will be private. On Wednesday, April 28, 2021, at 1 p.m., friends and family may go to www.ScarpelliFH.com, and select Bernie’s obituary, to view a livestream of his funeral service. Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens. Military honors will be accorded by Ft. Cumberland Post 13 Honor Guard.

Instead of sending flowers, the family would like for contributions to be made to the Ruby Memorial Hospital Ophthalmology Department, WVU Eye Institute, 1 Medical Center Drive, Morgantown, WV 26506.
