Betty Lou Grosscup
October 22, 1939 - August 28, 2024 (Age 84)
Betty Lou (Dutro) Grosscup, 84, passed on Wednesday, August 28th at Genesis Morrison House after a long battle with Peripheral Arterial Disease. She followed her husband in death after just 10 months.
Betty was born in Zanesville on Oct 22, 1939. She was the daughter of Clyde W. and Leota Dutro. Betty was married to James (Jim) L. Grosscup on December 24, 1958. They were married for 64 years, till Jim passed in October of 2023. Each anniversary was filled with overflowing love, celebrated with the entire family as Christmas was always at their home on Christmas Eve.
She is survived by her daughter Ginger (Steve) Hamilton; one very special granddaughter, Bridget (Travis) Riggle; two special grandsons: Jason Boetcher and Britton Boetcher (Misty Merkle); and four great grandchildren: Isabella and Payton Boetcher and Axton and Emerson Riggle. Betty is also survived by two sisters-in-law: Betty Jane Grosscup and Carolee Lohan; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Betty’s family also includes two bonus granddaughters: Kara Hamilton and Katie (TJ) Fitzmaurice; and three bonus great grandchildren: Early and Jesse Strickland, and Tommy Fitzmaurice. She is also survived by her long-time best friend Shirley Drake, who she grew up with in Blue Rock. Betty was also surrounded by wonderful neighbors, who were like family to her.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband, a daughter Jill Grosscup, a brother Gene Dutro, as well as several brothers and sisters-in-law.
Betty retired from Elder Beerman. She began her career there when they opened at the Colony Square Mall. A favorite story is how she was sick the day of her interview, so Jim took a picture of Betty in a frame and went to the interview. He showed the manager her picture and told them “She really wants to work here.” She was hired and spent 25 years with the company.
Betty loved her family immensely and her favorite hobby was cooking and baking for them. She loved all holidays, especially Christmas. She was always excited for the entire family to be together. Everything that Betty did, she did with love. She cooked delicious meals, baked the best desserts (especially pies) and was dubbed Betty Crocker by her neighbors. Everything was cooked and baked with love and a little extra sugar. She also loved decorating her home, sewing, wall papering, mowing with her Kubota tractor, and gardening. Betty also loved to watch OSU Football and Basketball. Go Bucks!
Betty fought a hard battle, but was ready to be pain free and to see Jim and Jill.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Betty’s great grandchildren's Parent Teacher Organization: Columbus Preparatory Academy Parent Teacher Organization, c/o Bridget Riggle, 2280 Mecca Rd, Columbus, OH 43224.
The family would like to thank the caring staff at Genesis Morrison House for the amazing care given to Betty. Also, a special thanks to the staff at Altercare and Helen Purcell where Betty spent some time after her July surgery.
