June 7, 1944 - June 9, 2025 (Age 81)

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Carl Joseph Dewhurst, who departed this life peacefully at the age of 81 on June 9th 2025. Carl was born in a taxi cab on the way to the hospital on 4th street, Alexandria Virginia on June 7th 1944. Son of Richard (Dick) J. & Joan F. Brewer- Dewhurst

He grew up in Harrington Park, New Jersey for most of his childhood. He was a proud graduate of Northern Valley Regional High School in Demarest, New Jersey, Class of 1963. A gifted and passionate auto mechanic, Carl made his mark as the first Registered Technician of Volkswagen of America in 1969. He dedicated much of his professional life to Volkswagen Group of America in Allendale, New Jersey, and later became an active member of the Central Ohio Vintage VW Club (COVVC) in Columbus, Ohio. His love for cars was not just a career—it was a lifelong passion.

Carl was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 48 years, Chong Hui (Hee) Kim-Dewhurst (Kim); his parents, Richard (Dick) Joseph Dewhurst and Joan Francis Brewer-Dewhurst; and his brother, Richard (Richie) B. Dewhurst. He is survived by his loving son, Phillip J. Dewhurst, and daughter-in-law Despina Angelopoulos-Dewhurst. His cherished grandchildren: Phillip A. (Alex), Cristian L. (Luke), Jodi D. (Destiny), Jacqueline Sylvia-Hope (Hope), Donald R. (Ricky), Josilyn Lorraine (Rainy), and Athena Leah-Marie Dewhurst; and step-grandchildren Rocky Styles Maxwell and Xanthoula (Soula) F. Maxwell. He also leaves behind great-grandchildren Marc Adrien Dewhurst, Dakota Mackenzie Dewhurst and Ezra Grace Maxwell, along with extended family, Pastor James & Joe Dewhurst/family and many dear friends.

Carl’s legacy is not only measured in the engines he fixed but in the family he loved, the friends he inspired, and the laughter he brought wherever he went.

His encyclopedic knowledge of all things automotive and his boundless enthusiasm for cars—CARS, CARS, and more CARS—will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
