Charles Herbert Gill

Charles Herbert Gill (Herb), age 90, of Charlotte passed away peacefully Saturday afternoon, March 8th, 2025 at Cadence Senior Living in Mint Hill.

Herb was born August 18, 1934 at Mercy Hospital in Charlotte. He was the fourth of four sons born to Nicholas Howard Gill and Hattie Lee Woods Gill. He attended Elizabeth Elementary, A. G. Junior High and Central High, graduating in 1952. He studied for 2 years at Charlotte College (now UNCC); then taking advantage of the GI Bill, joined the Army in the fall of 1954. Following basic training at Fort Jackson, SC he served 2 years at Fort Bragg, NC. He then enrolled in NC State College, graduating in 1959 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. He was employed by Douglas Aircraft in Charlotte, where he worked on Nike guided surface-to-air missiles. In June 1960, he joined Duke Power in Charlotte, where he had a long career serving in the Maintenance, Relay, and Operating departments, ultimately retiring in 1992.

Herb was raised in Caldwell Memorial Presbyterian Church in Charlotte and was a member of Philadelphia Presbyterian Church in Mint Hill at the time of his death. He faithfully served the church in a variety of capacities for many years including Deacon, Elder, finance and maintenance.

Herb loved to read; in particular the Charlotte Observer and the Wall Street Journal. He enjoyed gardening, the Blue Ridge Parkway, classical music, feeding birds (and outwitting squirrels), family and local Charlotte/Mint Hill history. He and Sylvia traveled all 50 states and 13 foreign countries.

Herb will be remembered for his sense of humor, integrity, benevolence, and devotion to duty and family.

Along with his parents, Herb was preceded in death by his daughter, Janet Lee Gill, his three older brothers, Howard, Bill, Joe; half-sisters, June and Natalie and 3 half-brothers. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Sylvia Leonhardt Gill; two sons, David Herbert Gill (Susan Hawes) of Charlotte; James Everette Gill and wife, Tammy Duncan Gill of Marietta, SC; granddaughters, Danielle Elise Gill, and Aubree Taylor Gill Gantenbein and husband, Curdin Gantenbein; two great granddaughters, Amelia Jane Gantenbein and Lucy Reese Gantenbein, all of Jacksonville, Fla; and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Philadelphia Presbyterian Church 11501 Bain School Road, Mint Hill, NC 28227; or the Mint Hill Historical Society 7601 Matthews-Mint Hill Rd, Mint Hill, NC 28227; or the Catawba Land Conservancy.

Family will receive friends on Saturday, March 15, 2025 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Philadelphia Presbyterian Church, 11501 Bain School Rd, Mint Hill, NC 28227. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM, 11501 Bain School Rd, Mint Hill, NC 28227. Herb will be laid rest at Sunset Memory Gardens, 8901 Lawyers Rd, Mint Hill, NC 28227.
