Charles Tewell

Charles Tewell “Chuck” age: 89, husband of Joy Stack Tewell, since February 11, 2006, of Indian Trail, NC, passed away on November 27, 2024, after a long illness with his wife and family by his side.

Chuck was born on August 24,1935 in Richmond, Indiana to John Tewell and Betty Kovach Tewell, before settling in New Westville, Ohio.

He attended Jackson High School in Campbelltown, Ohio. Chuck was employed by INA insurance, later Cigna Insurance. He retired in 1995 after 35 years of employment. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served in the 3rd Armed Division-Germany. He attended Oak Grove Baptist Church. He was a great dancer and taught country line dancing for over 20 years to seniors at several churches in Mecklenburg and Union County. He and his wife Joy organized bus trips for seniors, they traveled all over the United States and Canada, 32 bus trips in all. Chuck and Joy belonged to two different dance clubs in Charlotte. The Zodiac Club and HI lighters, which Chuck was president at one time. The clubs booked cruises with Joy and Chuck going on a cruise annually. They took 30+ cruises all in the Caribbean and Panama. Chuck was a resident of North Carolina for the past 57 years after moving from Ohio. He married Joy Stack Tewell. They made their home in Indian Trail. He was a devoted husband and father who cherished his time spent with family. He maintained his career in the insurance industry for over 35 years. A lighthearted and fun guy, he was a comic and loved to tell jokes. He had a loving and gentle nature with a great sense of humor. He donated time to raise money for senior outings at Oak Grove Church. He loved to spend time with his family and traveling. He enjoyed country music and spent most of his time line dancing. Chuck will be most remembered for his love of life and sense of humor.

He is preceded in death by his first wife of 39 years, Jackie Tewell, and survived by their two sons: Nick Tewell (Glenda), Dave Tewell (Christine) and a daughter: Claudia Garoutte (Mike), 2 grandsons: Tyler Tewell and Jesse Tewell, 1 granddaughter: Kristen Frierson and 3 Great Granddaughters.

Chuck is survived by his loving wife, Joy of 18 years, daughter, Vicky McCraney (Jim). They have six grandchildren; Brandon McCraney (Nicole), Brent McCraney (Stacy) and Ashley McCraney Smith (Nick), Tiffany Stack, Kendera Everett (Chris), Chad Stack, eighteen great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.

Joy has been by his side through all his good and bad times. She loved Chuck dearly and they had a great life for 13 years until Covid hit and changed his life with his long term Covid. They made the best with the good and bad days spending time with family and friends. Chuck’s family would like to express their deep gratitude to his Nurse, Nicole, of Palliative Care & Hospice or Charlotte for their wonderful care and to his friends for their many acts of kindness and support during his illness.

Visitation will be Tuesday, December 3rd, 2024 at 12:00PM at Oak Grove Baptist Church, 4013 New Town Rd., Waxhaw, NC 28173. The funeral will begin at 1:00 followed by a burial in Sunset Memory Gardens, 8901 Lawyers Rd., Mint Hill, NC 28227.
