Darl P. Sams
May 6, 1949 - February 23, 2025 (Age 75)
Darl Paul Sams, 75, of Bedford, PA; passed away peacefully Sunday evening, February 23, 2025 with his family by his side. He was welcomed into the arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Darl was born at Timmons Hospital in Bedford on May 6, 1949, the son of Walter C. and Florence M. (Diehl) Sams. His siblings include a brother, Gary married to Patsy (Hall), Everett, PA; and a sister Sharon married to Sam Bowers, Clear Spring, MD.
He was married to the love of his life, Betty Jane “Janie” (Clites) on June 16, 1973 at the Manns Choice Church of God in Manns Choice. Over the fifty-one years of marriage friends always said they were “joined at the hip”. Together they had two children Tricia Fetter married to Ryan, Bedford, PA and Aaron Sams married to Janelle (Koontz), Tulsa, OK; grandchildren include Jay Fetter, Sierra Pittman, Alexis Fetter, McKenzie Pittman, Joshua Fetter, A.J. Sams and Jack Sams.
Due to his father’s military career, he attended high school in Frankfurt, Germany and graduated from the George C. Marshall High School in Falls Church, VA in 1967. The education abroad led to many enjoyable high school class reunion trips. He attended Shippensburg University and graduated in 1971, with a bachelor in mathematics. He later returned to Shippensburg receiving his master’s degree in computer science.
Darl was an educator at the Everett Area School District for thirty-two years, teaching geometry, algebra and computer science until his retirement in 2002. During his teaching career he was also an active member in the National Guard, serving for twenty-eight years. He attended Sargent Major Academy at Fort Bliss, El Paso, TX; graduating in January 1995 and retiring with the rank as Master Sargent.
He enjoyed playing cards with family, hunting, collecting baseball cards, collecting and listening to vinyl records and model trains. He loved woodworking, building model train landscapes and family trips to the beach.
He was a member of the Everett Church of God and previously a member of the Manns Choice Church of God, where he taught Sunday School and Wednesday evening Bible Study. Over the years he played fast pitch softball and baseball in various local leagues, coached girls softball for Everett and served as a PIAA basketball official. The majority of his softball time was spent playing for May Bros and also the Everett RMC with the Twilight League.
Friends and Family may call at the Akers Funeral Home, Inc., 299 Raystown Road, Everett, PA on Wednesday, February 26, 2025 from 5-8 P.M. and on Thursday from 10:00 A.M. until the hour of service at the funeral home.
Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, February 27, 2025 at 11:00 A.M. in the Chapel at Akers Funeral Home with his brother Pastor Gary Sams officiating.
Burial will be held at the Bedford County Memorial Park with military honors conducted by the Fort Bedford Honor Guard.
