Dennis Smeltzer

Dennis L. Smeltzer, 71, of Ligonier (formerly of Greensburg), passed away Sunday, January 23, 2022 at home. He was born August 23, 1950 in Greensburg. Denny’s greatest passion in life was birding. Fellow birders say that he had the “best ear” in the business – the ability to identify a bird by its song, even from miles away. He was one of the founders and first President of The Westmoreland Birding Club. He also participated in other organizations with their yearly bird counts, especially Powdermill Nature Reserve. His parents, Sara and Howard Smeltzer preceded him in death. He is survived by an uncle, Glenn Smeltzer, various cousins, and his loving husband, Jim Mikula. They were together nearly forty years and were married the last 7 years. Dennis was a kind, gentle, helping soul who really cared for others. There will be no visitations and interment will be private at his request. Birding friends may make a donation in Dennis’ name to any birding organization. Arrangements by Leo M.
