Donald Denny Allen

Donald “Denny” Allen, age 83, of Mint Hill, North Carolina, passed peacefully on June 30, 2026.
He is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn King Allen, originally of Arlington, Texas, and his daughter, Robyn R. Allen, both of Mint Hill. He is also survived by his sister, Donnalea Allen Flynt of Greensboro, along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald Dulin Allen and Evelyn Henderson Allen.
Denny was a graduate of UNC Charlotte in Business and Economics and also studied Trust and Estates Administration at Northwestern University in Evansville, Illinois. He served as a Federal Bank Examiner with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency under the U.S. Treasury Department until his retirement in the 1980’s. He later spent twelve years as a rural mail carrier with the Mint Hill Post Office. Following retirement, he devoted five years to serving the citizens of North Carolina as a Superior Court mediator in counties across the state.
At age 65, Denny pursued a lifelong passion by earning certification in grape viniculture and winemaking from Surry Community College in Dobson, North Carolina. His boutique vineyard became a source of great pride, earning numerous amateur wine competition awards throughout the Southeast. He delighted in sharing his estate wines and homemade jelly with friends, neighbors, and loyal customers.
A lifelong musician, Denny performed throughout the Southeast for more than fifty years. Equally at home playing country, beach music, and blues, he was well known for his remarkable ability to perform simultaneously on both tenor and alto saxophones, in perfect harmony. He spent many years entertaining audiences with The Fabulous Plaids before later going solo in DD's Blues Band. Music remained one of the great joys of his life.
Denny also carried on his family's agricultural legacy through DD Farms, expanding the beef cattle operation founded by his father. His grass-fed beef, customer appreciation gatherings, estate wines, and warm hospitality created lasting friendships throughout the Mint Hill community.
Dedicated to service, Denny was an active member of Mint Hill Lodge No. 742 for many years and proudly served as Worshipful Master in 1999.
The family will hold a private service.
