Donald Mattox
April 2, 1932 - November 21, 2024 (Age 92)
Donald “Don” C. Mattox, 92, of Zanesville, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 21, 2024, at Genesis Healthcare, with his loving family by his side.
Don was born on April 2, 1932, in Zanesville, to the late Robert and Clara (Davis) Mattox. He attended Lash High School on North Sixth Street, where he met June Dennis at a football game in 1951. The two were married a year later and set up house next to his grandparents in Zanesville. Don and June then moved to Buckeye Lake, where Don built his wife a brand-new house and started a family, raising three sons: Robert, Mark, and Brian. Don was employed by the Ohio Power Coal Company, where he worked as an oiler on the Big Muskie. This career eventually brought them to Chandlersville, where he used his talent and drive to convert a small farmhouse into a home that he and June shared for the rest of their lives. Don retired in 1994.
Don and June loved to travel. Together, they visited all 50 states, as well as Canada and several countries in the Caribbean. He was active within his community, serving most of his adult life as a proud member of organizations such as the Gage and Gavel #448 Masonic Lodge, the Olive Branch Chapter #251 OES, and the Valley of Scottish Rites of Thornville. He was also a lifelong member of the Chandlersville Methodist Church.
Don is survived by his sons, Robert and Mark (Susie) Mattox, both of Zanesville; his daughter-in-law, Kim Mattox of Zanesville, who has cared for him since his wife’s passing; his grandchildren, Tiffany Mattox (Matt Wood), Garrett and Rylee, Megann Mattox (Shorty Martinez), Jason Hinson, Erin Taylor, Ryan Mattox (Nicholas Faranda), Melissa (Tim) Ogg, Bailee, Maggie and Brian, Kristin Mattox, Adalee June, who brought her great-grandfather so much joy, Ashley (Bob) Long, Brycen and Kiara, and Devin Mattox, Camden and Chloe; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.
In addition to his parents, Don is preceded in death by Junie, his beloved wife of 67 years, whom he lovingly referred to as “Sweet Half”; his son, Brian Mattox; his daughters-in-law, Lindsay Mattox and Diana Bohn; his sister, Nancy Hoover; and his sister-in-law, Bobby Jean (Junior) Bond.
Visitations for Don will be held from 4 to 6 pm on Monday, November 25, 2024, at the Farus Funeral Home of Duncan Falls, with Masonic services at 6 pm provided by Gage and Gavel #448. A second visitation will be held the following day, Tuesday, November 26, 2024, from 11 am to 1 pm. A funeral service will be held at 1 pm following visitations. Pastor Doug Winner will officiate the service. Don will be laid to rest at Zanesville Memorial Park.
