Dorothy Richards

Dorothy Elizabeth (Hurd) Richards, 97, a resident of Homewood at Martinsburg, passed away Friday, November 17, 2023 at the home.
She was born in 1926 in Clementon Twp, NJ, the daughter of the late George E. Sr. and Viola M. (Cain) Hurd.
On Oct 9, 1948, she married Richard A Richards in Berwyn, PA and they raised their four children in Levittown, PA and Upper St. Clair, PA. He preceded her in death on October 17, 2009 following 61 years of marriage.
Surviving are their 4 children: son David Richards and wife, Ruth of Gore, VA, son John Richards and wife, Laura of High Point, NC, son Paul Richards and wife, Kristen of Bayse, VA, and daughter Judy of Green Cove Springs, FL. Dorothy is also survived by 11 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; and two sisters: Eleanor Palmatier in Florida and Shirley Nichol in Arizona.
Dorothy was a graduate of McCaskey High School in Lancaster, PA. She was primarily a homemaker, who also volunteered at local schools and hospitals in Levittown, Upper St. Clair and Manns Choice, PA. Dorothy led a faith- and prayer-filled life and volunteered at United Methodist churches as a Sunday school teacher, choir member, outdoor landscaper, and special events helper. In recent years she attended the Bice Memorial Chapel at Homewood at Martinsburg.
She was an avid birder and also enjoyed gardening with special interests in wildflowers and ornithology. Her children have many happy memories of family camping trips while growing up. Dorothy and Dick spent many happy months in retirement traveling in the US in their pop-up camper, as well as traveling overseas to several countries through the educational Elderhostel programs.
A celebration of life service will be held at 1:30 pm, Friday, December 8, 2023, at the Bice Memorial Chapel at Homewood at Martinsburg, Rev. Jerry McCuller Jr. officiating. Private inurnment will be held at Bedford County Memorial Park. Arrangements are by John K. Bolger Funeral Home Inc., Martinsburg.
