Dr. George Kopf

Dr. George M. Kopf, 88 of Zanesville, died Monday, March 18, 2024, at his home under the care of Genesis hospice following complications from Alzheimer’s. He was born Sunday, October 20, 1935, in Chilton, WI, the son of George Kopf and Mary (Schmid) Kopf. He married Sandra M. (Nolte) Kopf on Saturday, December 29, 1962. He was an active member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church, where he served as lector, and a member of the first parish council. He attended Our Lady of Light Catholic Community in Ft. Myers, while in Florida
Dr. Kopf graduated from the University of Wisconsin - Madison in 1961, with his medical degree. George served his country as a captain in the United States Air Force. Following his Air Force service he trained at the Wayne State University Kresge Eye Institute in Detroit, becoming a board certified ophthalmologist in 1969.
Dr. Kopf was a well-respected Ophthalmologist in the Zanesville Area for over 31 years. He was associated with both Bethesda and Good Samaritan Hospitals and served as President of the Good Samaritan Medical Center Board Medical Staff, Executive Committee.
He and Sandy traveled to Ghana in 2000 with the Christian Eye Ministry to perform surgeries. He was a member of Zanesville Noon Rotary, where he received the Rotarian of the Year Award in 2001. In 2001 they traveled to Brazil in conjunction with Rotary International on a surgical mission to the Amazon.
George enjoyed spending time outdoors where he enjoyed traveling, hiking, white water rafting, bird watching and gardening, especially hybrid tea roses. He was an avid tennis player and belonged to the Zanesville County Club and Shadow Wood Country Club in Estero, Florida.
George was a kind caring man who loved his family and community. He lent his support to Muskingum County Community Foundation, Genesis Foundation, Zanesville Concert Association, St. Nicholas Catholic Church, the Wilds and many other groups.
In addition to his wife of over 61 years, Sandy Kopf, George is survived by three daughters, Karen (Jeffrey) Kobunski, Jennifer Kopf and Nancy (Tim) Lewandowski; five grandchildren, Andrew Kobunski, Peter (Kara) Kobunski, Isaac Kopf, Elizabeth Lewandowski, Abigail Lewandowski and five nieces.
In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by one sister, Joan Baldock.
Friends may call from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 PM, Tuesday, March 26, 2024, at the Hillis, Combs & Nestor Funeral Home, 935 Forest Avenue, Zanesville. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 AM, Wednesday, March 27, 2024, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, 925 East Main Street, Zanesville, with Fr. David Young as celebrant. Burial will follow in Zanesville Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers Memorial contributions may be made to the George M. & Sandra M.
