Mr. Edward Richard Newton, 89, passed away on Monday, March 3, 2025, at his home in Rock Hill.

A funeral service will be held for Mr. Newton beginning at 6:00 PM on Thursday, March 6, 2025, at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, 2133 Ebenezer Road, Rock Hill, SC 29732.

Entombment for Mr. Newton will take place at 9:00 AM on Friday, March 7, 2025, at Grandview Memorial Park, 620 S Cherry Road, Rock Hill, SC 29732.

Following the entombment, the family invites the public to the Celebration of Life Service at Westminster Presbyterian Chapel, beginning at 11:00 AM. Refreshments and breakfast will be available at Westminster, prior to the service.

Mr. Edward R. Newton, 89, of Rock Hill, South Carolina passed away peacefully on Monday, March 3, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Edward R. Newton, fondly called Ed, was born on May 14, 1935 in Conway, South Carolina to the late Mr. Hoyt Newton and Mrs. Cecil Monroe Newton.

Ed was educated in the public schools of Conway, South Carolina and graduated from Whittemore High School. He furthered his education at Claflin University in Orangeburg, SC with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1959, New York University, New York, NY with a Master’s Degree in Education in 1963 and continued his studies at Winthrop College, now Winthrop University, with an EDS in 1975.

As a young man, Ed volunteered to serve in the United States Armed Forces, serving from 1952-1955.

Ed spent his entire adult life in education. His work experience included teaching in the Fort Mill School District Four School System from 1959-1965. He continued to teach in Rock Hill School District Three from 1965-1971. Ed expanded his work experience by serving as an Assistant Principal at the Sullivan Junior High School, Rock Hill School District Three 1971-1990. He then served as Assistant Principal at the Rock Hill High School from 2005-2007.

Ed was a faithful member of the New Mt. Olivet A. M. E. Zion Church. He served for many years as a dedicated Class Leader, a Sunday School Teacher, a member of the Bus Committee, the Men’s Ministry, the Lay Council, the Annual Conference Planning Committee, and served on the Board of Christian Education. Ed was a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, a member of the South Carolina State Athletic Commission, served on the York County Library Board, the Rock Hill Housing Authority Board for more than 10 years, the Rock Hill Natural Gas Authority Board, the York County Teen Pregnancy Board, and was a member of the North Central Medical Center Board.

Ed was preceded in death by his first wife, Kittye Gilmore Newton, the mother of Charlene.

Ed leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife, Mrs. Patricia A. Newton. His daughter, Mrs. Charlene Newton Reid (Paul) of John Creek, Georgia and his son, Jonathan Edward Newton of the home. His grandchildren, Ariel Reid of San Jose, California and Alexa Reid of the University of Madrid, Madrid, Spain. He also leaves a host of cousins and friends whom he loved dearly.

Edward R. Newton will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate to have known him. His kindness and devotion will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and the many lives he touched during his tenure as an educator.
