Eleanor Lewis

February 14, 1923 - October 5, 2022 (Age 99)

Eleanor Brickley Lewis, 99, died peacefully Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2022, in Clermont, Fla. Eleanor was born on Valentine's Day 1923, in Youngstown, Ohio and was a graduate of Fitch High School, where she was an outstanding student and a talented member of the girls basketball team. In 1957, she and her husband, Jack, moved their family of six to Pennsylvania, where Eleanor became known for her great cooking and the care of her lively household. She will be remembered for the thousands of delicious cookies she baked every year for friends and family at Christmastime. Eleanor loved to knit, crochet and cross-stitch, and also enjoyed bowling, solving crossword puzzles and playing many card and board games. There were no better teams, in her mind, than the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pirates and Penguins. She loved her ice cream and was awarded The Golden Brownie Award by her husband. Eleanor was a down-to-earth, honest, and practical woman who excelled at rocking babies, calming them while singing woefully out of tune. Her family was always the main focus of her life, and she made sure that everyone was treated equally. After her children were safely on their own paths, she worked at Thrift Drug in Greensburg, until her retirement. Eleanor was also a loyal member of the Third United Church of Christ, South Greensburg, where she was treasurer for several years. Eleanor is survived by her four loving children, Denny (Nancy) of Evanston, Wyo.; Terry (Carol) of Longs, S.C.; Darlene Trembulak and Marsha Lewis, both of Clermont, Fla.; a sister, Ruth DeSena (Russ), of Greensburg; six grandchildren, Tara (Mike) Matthews, of Belmont, N.C.; Jennifer (Ed) Lewis of Cumming, Ga.; Terry (Kris), of Greensburg; Kristy (Jason) Swain, of Altoona; Stacey Finch, of Livingston, La.; and Kevin Sweetland of Chicago, Ill.; seven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and ten nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Jack Lewis; two brothers, Grant and Robert Brickley; and five nephews and a niece. She was deeply loved and respected by all who knew her, and she will be greatly missed. Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, at the BARNHART FUNERAL HOME, 505 E. Pittsburgh St., Greensburg, PA 15601. A celebration of Eleanor's life will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, 2022, at Third United Church of Christ, 1526 Elm St., South Greensburg, PA 15601. In lieu of flowers, consider a donation in her memory to a charity of your choice.
