Ella Sue Nyborg

Ella Sue Nyborg, 92, passed away on August 28, 2026, leaving behind a life defined by family, devotion, and the enduring spirit of the West Virginia mountains where she was born.
Ella entered the world on March 2, 1934, in Jumping Branch, West Virginia, the daughter of Clarence and Maude Meadows Frye. Growing up in those mountains shaped her—its quiet strength, its closeness to family, and its simple, steady way of life stayed with her throughout her years. The hills of Jumping Branch were her first home, and she carried them in her heart no matter where life took her.
As a young woman, Ella came to Charlotte, North Carolina, where she met James William Nyborg, Sr. The two were married in York, South Carolina, on February 21, 1953, beginning a partnership built on love, commitment, and shared purpose. When James entered service with the United States Marine Corps, his duty station carried them to Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, North Carolina, where they began building their family.
Blessed with four children, Ella devoted herself to caring for her home and the people within it. She took pride in being a mother—steady, present, and loving—and her family remained the center of her world. She enjoyed Bingo, but of greater joy was returning to the mountains, reconnecting with the place that shaped her childhood and the heritage she treasured. Most of all, Ella loved time spent with her sisters and her family, the laughter and closeness that defined her life, and she and her sisters shared a bond and togetherness that will forever be remembered.
Ella is survived by her four children: Terry (husband Michael) Smith of Locust, NC, Jeannie Roberts of Charlotte, James William (wife Angie) Nyborg Jr. of Monroe, NC, and Kimberly (husband John) Martins of Charlotte. She is also survived by eleven grandchildren—Kelly, Kristy, Kayce, Amber, Kay, Jacob, Stephen, Sydney, Britney, Morgan, and Christian—as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends who loved her dearly.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her siblings, and a grandson.
Ella’s family has entrusted her care to the family of Lowe‑Neddo Funeral Home. Services will be held at 11 AM on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, in the funeral home chapel at 4715 Margaret Wallace Road, Matthews. Friends may visit with the family beginning at 10 AM.
Following the chapel service, all are invited to accompany the family to Sunset Memory Gardens, 8901 Lawyers Road, Charlotte, where Ella will be laid to rest beside her husband.
