Fred D. Petrella, Sr.

Fred D. Petrella Sr., 86, of Hunker, Hempfield Township, passed away Tuesday, June 14, 2022. He was born Sept. 21, 1935, in Greensburg, the son of the late Joseph and Mary (Glover) Petrella. Fred's first job was working at his father's store, J&J Market. He was a well-known mixologist at the Villa Petrella that was owned by his father for many years. He had a special love for horses, which he raised and trained. He donated to many charitable organizations throughout his life. Fred was proud of his Italian heritage, which he carried on to his children and grandchildren. He taught them the value of hard work and the rewards that can come from it. His family proudly continues to carry on this philosophy. Fred was always devoted to his family. His primary goal was to make sure family was safe and provided for. Fred also enjoyed spending his time farming, taking great care of his tractor and flying model airplanes. He retired as a brick layer with Local No. 75. He was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Youngwood, the Knights of Columbus of Youngwood and was also a member and past president of the A&B Club in Youngwood. "It is not what he has, but what he is that describes the worth of a man." He is survived by his children, Fred Petrella Jr. (Donna), of Greensburg, Michelle Castine, of Hempfield Township, Philip Petrella (Fianc Cynthia Clark), of Hempfield Township, and Christina Johnston (Larry), of Greensburg; his grandchildren, Stephen Castine, Alexandra Troupe, Emily Petrella, Ricky Smith, Johnny Andrews Jr. and Julia Andrews; and his great-grandchildren, Hayden, Nash, Noah and Carmela. Fred is also survived by his sister, Mary Lou Kelly (Jim), of Franklin, Tenn. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barbara Petrella; his infant son, Patrick; his brother, Joseph Petrella Jr.; and his sister, Dolores Burrell. A visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 16, 2022, in the C. RICHARD McCAULEY FUNERAL HOME INC., 101 S, Fourth St., Youngwood. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 17, 2022, in Holy Cross Catholic Church, 711 Depot St., Youngwood. Interment will follow in the Westmoreland County Memorial Park, Greensburg.
