Gary D. Skaggs
January 26, 1943 - August 22, 2025 (Age 82)
ROCK HILL – Mr. Gary Dale Skaggs, 82, passed into the loving arms of Jesus Christ on Friday, August 22, 2025. Those who knew Mr. Skaggs knew that above all, he loved the Lord, his wife, children and grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, at First Baptist Church, 481 Hood Drive, Rock Hill, SC 29730 with Dr. Tommy Huddleston and Rev. Steve Hogg officiating. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. A private family burial will be at a later day in Grandview Memorial Park on Cherry Road.
Born in Huntington, WV, Mr. Skaggs was the son of the late Len Skaggs and the late Ada Brumfield Skaggs. He graduated from Huntington East High School where he excelled in sports as a multi-sport athlete. He was later inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame for his performance in baseball. This passion for baseball carried him into the professional league where he played for the California Angels Organization, specifically the Rock Hill Wrens as a pitcher. Over the years, he shared his love of sports with young people and was a coach for church and city sports. He was very instrumental in starting Cherry Park.
Mr. Skaggs was a devoted member of First Baptist Church where he was a Deacon. He previously served as a Deacon and Choir Leader of Sylvia Circle Baptist Church and as a Deacon at Catawba Baptist Church. He retired from Bowater as a millwright, after 29 ½ years of service. He served on the ArrowPointe Credit Union supervisory board and helped usher in the partnership with Founders Credit Union. Mr. Skaggs was also a member of Masonic Lodge #111.
Mr. Skaggs is survived by his son, Kenny Skaggs and his wife, Sheila of Rock Hill; his daughter, Christy Skaggs Case and her husband, Chris of Rock Hill; his sister, Beverly Servetius of Boise, Idaho; his sister-in-law, Lorraine Herwig and her husband, Holger of Calgary Alberta, Canada; and his two granddaughters, Taylor Skaggs Ambrose and her wife, Marjorie; and Caroline Skaggs. Mr. Skaggs was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Janice Skaggs; a son, John Reger Skaggs; his twins, Keith and Kelly Skaggs; a baby boy, three sisters and two brothers.
