Dr George R. Hunter Jr., 82, of Jeannette, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Oct. 12,2025, in Lititz Memory Care, surrounded by his family. He was. Born Dec. 1, 1942 in Herminie, he was the son of the late, George R Hunter, Sr and Anna (Vijuk) Hunter.!

George received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Ohio State University and his MD degree from Temple University School of Medicine—doing his internship and residency in Philadelphia. He was Board Certified in Internal Medicine.

Prior to his retirement, George was known as Dr.Hunter, having his practice in Jeannette for 44 years. A voracious reader, he read widely not only in medicine, but also on wide ranging topics in nonfiction, literature, and popular novels. Vacations were seldom longer than a week because of the busy practice. He collected early political campaign buttons, so antique shops were on the to -do list when traveling along with visiting book stores and libraries.! Above all he loved being with his family. Dive trips with family, visiting historic sites, and, well into his70s, riding horseback in the Arizona desert in July, were so special to him. He was so proud of our local region and the hard working people here. He maintained long- term relations with Sewickley and college friends and the special busboy team from long ago. He enjoyed listening to Frank Sinatra, which we played for him during his final hours. Above all, he loved being deeply involved in sharing lives of his wife, children, and grandchildren. His patients he thought of as friends, his office staff as family. Dr. Hunter cherished his 40 plus years serving medical needs of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill at Assumption Hall and then at Caritas Christi in Greensburg.

He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years , Karen (Rice) Hunter; two daughters Laura (Peter) Jaworski of Texas, Beth (Charles) Kuhn of London; son George III of Lancaster; four special grandchildren, Hunter Jaworski, J.T. Kleeh, George IV, and Austin Kirby. George is also survived by his special cousins of theVijuk, Kovach, and Flannigan familes. They were like siblings to him. For more than 40years, he and his family were members of Ascension Parish Church Jeannette wherethey are so glad to have had supportive clergy and friendships. He returns to where he, also has thrived from loving clergy and friends. St Edwards is where he and his family were all members, where he was baptized, served as altar boy, was married, and where his children were baptized. A special, sincere thanks to the wonderful staffs at Arden Court and Legend of Lititz, and the Gane Hospice, for their love and compassionate care.

Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, 2025, at the JOSEPH W. NICKELS FUNERAL HOME, INC. Herminie, 724-446-7251.
