Glenn Mitchell
December 8, 1959 - February 11, 2022 (Age 62)
Glenn Michael Mitchell Sr. was born on December 8, 1959 in Canton, Ohio to the late James F. and Gertrude (Hayes) Mitchell. He transitioned from this life on February 11, 2022 surrounded by his family.
Michael, or Mike as everyone called him, attended Canton City Schools, he was very well liked and had a great sense of humor. When asked if he graduated, his reply would always be “No, but my brother Ricky did, so I’ll just share his diploma.
Michael was always a hard worker and got his first job at the age of 12. He worked various jobs throughout his life until his health failed in 2021. He firmly believed and took pride in these two things; the importance of employment and also that a man should work if he planned on eating. Michael instilled these principles in those closest to him.
Michael and Awanya were truly a love story; Awanya said “our families already knew each other and I met and knew Michael from him going to school with my older sisters, and I probably shouldn’t have but at 9 years old I had a crush on him. I would have never thought that years later we would be married.”
In 2016, Michael decided that he wanted a change, so he and Awanya moved to Columbus, Ohio. Once there, he took a job with a temp agency as a janitor and he was contracted to do janitorial work for a company called Ometek Inc. which is a machine shop. After only a couple months of working there, the owners of Ometek took notice of his strong work ethic and decided to hire him as a Machinist. It was a challenge that he quickly overcame. Glenn as they called him there, began to do his job so well that within months he was awarded “Employee of the Month”.
In addition to his parents, Michael was preceded in death by (1) brother, Riccarldo Echols; (2) special aunts, Janie Ruth Wingo and Lenell Bush; special Uncle Pastor George Dunwoody; special nephew, Rashad Williams; (2) brothers-in-law, Michael and Robin Williams, and (1) sister-in-law, Gloria Williams, who passed away on January 18, 2022.
He is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Awanya who he affectionately called “Lu, (5) daughters, Selena (Richard) Jones, Shawanna Gibson, D’Marte Williams, Darrial Rampey all of Columbus, Ohio, and Darianna Rampey of Canton, Ohio; (3) sons, Glenn Mitchell Jr., Sheldon (Tamika) Mitchell, and Kevin (Tawanna) Glaspie all of Cleveland, Ohio; (2) brothers, James “Butch” and Clyde “Pee Wee” Mitchell both of Canton, Ohio; (1) sister, Cleopatra (Thomas) Taylor of Memphis, Tennessee; (18) grandchildren, Richard Jr., Raeonna, Faith, Timere, and Judah Jones, Ja’Shae, Justin, Jazmarae, and Jahdaiya, Curtis, Nia’zer Kyles, Ni’Jhae, and Ni’eem Williams, and Rashawn Rampey Harris all of Columbus, Ohio, Sa’riyah, Sheldon, and Shelton Mitchell of Cleveland, Ohio, Derkwan and Darrion Lawson of Canton, Ohio; (1) great-granddaughter, Jonaya Ba of Columbus, Ohio; his mother-in-law, who he loved dearly, Jacolia Williams; aunts, Artelia Doss and Pastor Robin Dunwoody all of Canton, Ohio; (5) sisters-in-law, Valencia and Vivica Williams, Carla (Christopher) Anozie of Canton, Ohio, Saralyn Stevens and Venosha (Richard) Craig of Akron, Ohio; (6) brothers-in– law, Ivan, Marvin (Valerie) and Byron (Kenna) Williams of Canton, Ohio, Darryal (Judy) and Jermaine (Tracy) Williams of Massillon, Ohio, Walter Williams of the Mighty O’Jays, Las Vegas, Nevada; special cousins, Earnestine Eutsey, Diana Smalls, and Barbara (Michael) James; special nephews, Anthony Mitchell and Perez Williams; god-daughters, Daeja, Rezyona, Chloe, and NaKhi; special niece, Jasmyn Martin; special sister, Sonia Chin and his life long brothers, Leroy (Jackie) Tavares and Stan (Stephanie) Green, as well as a host of other relatives, and friends.
