H. Richard Bates

May 24, 1926 – September 27, 2026 (Age 100)

Harry Richard Bates, 100, of Canal Winchester, passed away on Sunday, September 27, 2026, at the Canal Winchester Care Center. Born on May 24, 1926, to the late Isaac Blaine Bates and Rosa (White) Bates, in Noble County, Ohio, Richard was the youngest of their 10 children.

He was an Army Veteran of World War II. He married Rose Anne Winland, his wife of 68 years, and together they raised four children. He retired from the Columbus Post Office in 1991. His faith guided all walks of his life. He was an active member of the Rager Road Church of Christ and served as a preacher, elder, Bible class teacher and was actively involved in home Bible studies. If you ever wanted to know anything about the Cincinnati Reds or Cleveland Cavaliers, he was the one to ask!

Richard is survived by his children, Ruth Leonard, Steve (Jeanette) Bates, Karen (Randy) Hinton and Philip (Kathy) Bates; 19 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild (and 16 spouses of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren). He was always ready to tell anyone how many grandchildren he had! He is also survived by his brothers-in-law, Max Winland, Danny (Connie) Winland and Joe (Barb) Winland, and many nieces and nephews.

Richard was preceded in death by his wife on September 6, 2018, his son-in-law, Stanley Leonard, his siblings, Bessie Willis, Orval Bates, Friend Bates, Albert Bates, Goldie Wilson, Chester Bates, Mildred Moore, Virgil Bates, Calvin Bates and their spouses.

We would like to give a special thank you to those who cared for (Harry) Richard at the CW Care Center. He made many friends there – including Lemon and Space and the “guys” who shared his table. We will always be grateful.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, October 4 from 2:00PM-5:00PM at Dwayne R. Spence Funeral Home, 650 W Waterloo St Canal Winchester, OH 43110. A second visitation will be held the following day on October 5 from 10:00AM-11:00AM with a funeral service to begin at 11:00AM. Burial to follow at Franklin Hills Memory Gardens, 5802 Elder Rd, Canal Winchester, OH 43110.
