Harold "Hal" John Shaffer, proud Marine Corps, Vietnam veteran and Purple Heart recipient, Corp. Harold "Hal" John Shaffer, 74, of Lower Burrell, died Memorial Day, Monday May 30, 2022, in his home after a 14-year battle with cancer. He was born in Youngstown, Ohio, Sept. 15, 1947, to the late Harold W. and Lillian Elizabeth Shuler Shaffer, and has been a resident of Lower Burrell after previously residing in Pulaski and the North Hill area of Pittsburgh. Mr. Shaffer worked as a manager for Medrad for 34 years and had worked as a farmer for a convent when he was in his teens. He was a life member of the VFW Post 92, Lower Burrell, and enjoyed bowling, traveling, going to the casino and attending national Vietnam Marine Corps reunions. He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Virginia "Dee" Butera Shaffer; son, John Harold Shaffer, of San Leon, Texas; two stepchildren, Shani (Geoff) Cambal and Todd Taylor Jr., both of Lower Burrell; and grandchildren John Shaffer, Courtney Cambal and Drew Cambal. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his three sisters, Viola Shaffer, Katherine Bussey and Lois Ann Nail. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Heritage Hospice, especially Robert and Tammy, for the quality of care Mr. Shaffer received. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at THE RUSIEWICZ OF LOWER BURRELL FUNERAL HOME, 3124 Leechburg Road at Alder Street, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday by Pastor Doug Marshall. Burial with military honors by the Vandergrift Honor Guard and the Marine Corps will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park, Lower Burrell. The VFW will conduct services at 3 p.m. Thursday, followed by the Marine Corps League #1416 at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations made in his name to the American Cancer Society
