Harry Murray

June 12, 1926 - February 18, 2022 (Age 95)

Rock Hill, SC – Mr. Harry (Hal) H. Murray, Sr., 95, passed away on Friday, February 18, 2022 at Chandler Place.

A graveside service for Mr. Murray will be held on Thursday, February 24, 2022 at Grandview Memorial Park-Cherry Road at 11:00 am. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 23, 2022 from 4:00-5:30 pm at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, 2133 Ebenezer Road, Rock Hill, SC 29732.

A native of Waycross, GA, Mr. Murray was born on June 12, 1926 to Harry Hobson Murray and Emma Halford Murray and grew up near Bunnell, Florida. He was drafted into the United States Army and was a World War II veteran. He served in Okinawa and Korea from September 1944 to December 1946. Mr. Murray married his college sweetheart, Malvena F. Murray in May 1948 and graduated from Berry College in Rome, GA in 1949. He moved to Rock Hill in 1951 and worked at Celanese until his retirement in 1988. He was a member of Oakland Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, secretary and youth leader. He loved gardening and participated in the Master Gardening Program through the Clemson Extension Agency. He also enjoyed woodworking and taught himself to cane chairs. Through the help of two to three family members, Mr. Murray built their home. He took loving care of his wife, Malvena for the last ten years of her life. The Murray children and grandchildren were blessed with wonderful parent role models.

Mr. Murray is survived by his three children, Harry “Hallie” H. Murray, Jr. (Donna) of Rock Hill, SC; David Murray (Mary) of Seneca, SC and Beth Haile (Butch) of Rock Hill; grandchildren, Lindsey Murray and Ashley McIntosh, both of Winston-Salem, NC; Robin McDaniel and Lauren Stokes, both of Rock Hill; Benjamin Haile of Chester, SC; Jonathan Haile of Columbia, SC and Patrick Haile of Rock Hill; great-grandchildren, Riley McIntosh, Harper McDaniel, Tyler Starnes, Abby Starnes and another great-grandson due in March. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Remley Murray and Van Murray.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Mr. Murray’s name to Oakland Baptist Church, 1067 Oakland Avenue, Rock Hill, SC 29732.
