Hazel graduated from McCaskey High School and Lancaster Business School. Upon leaving graduation she worked at Armstrong Industries before transitioning to being a homemaker and mother. Hazel was a people person and volunteered a considerable amount of time in various ways. She was a member of the Jaycees and a charter member of Hempfield Women’s Club. Upon moving to Woodcrest Villa, she volunteered in the Thrift Shop and served on the Marketing Committee. She also spent time volunteering with the American Red Cross at Lancaster General Hospital, and Meals on Wheels. She was a 75-year member of Bethany Presbyterian Church where she served in many capacities with the Women’s Association. She volunteered weekly, up to the time of her death, preparing for the church basement sales.

She will lovingly be missed by her family; daughters Kim, wife of Geoffrey Shields of Virginia and Lori Stauffer of Lancaster, six grandchildren: Kyle Stauffer (Laurie), Kevin Stauffer (Angie), Kate Stauffer (Paul), Brad Shields (Alie), Tyler Shields, Garrett Shields (Rachel), and nine great-grandchildren: Jak, Beckham, Hunter, Rowan, Dawson, Summit, Wren, Vale and Bennett. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Kenneth Charles and Dale Charles.
