Helen S. Layman
June 25, 1932 - October 18, 2021 (Age 89)
Helen (Freeman) Layman, 89, of New Concord, passed away peacefully on October 18, 2021, while at her home and under the care of Shriver’s Hospice.
Helen was born in Zanesville on June 25, 1932. She is the daughter of the late Joseph A. and Margaret (Speer) Freeman McCaughey. Helen was raised by her aunt and uncle, the late Mary and Albert Knight. She was a 1950 graduate of New Concord High School, and on her eighteenth birthday, she married John Arndt Layman. Helen was active in the Jack and Jill Mothers Club in New Concord. She worked as a bookkeeper for Hall and Barber in Cambridge. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, traveling, and spending time with her family, but most especially, Helen enjoyed her role as the world’s best babysitter.
Helen leaves to cherish her memory, her sons, Steve Layman of Zanesville and John Layman of Douglas, Wyoming; her grandchildren, Abby (Pat) Corder of Zanesville, Amy Layman of New Concord, Adam Layman of New Concord, Jennifer (Chad) Wycoff of Pickerington, Ashley (Jason) Bennett of Wadsworth, and Sheena (Adam) Hayes of Thornville; her eight great-grandchildren, Tanner (Ally) Corder, Emilee (Austin) Carter, Kyle Layman, Laila (Cole Casey) Richards, Logan and Evan Wycoff, and Peyton and Jordan Hayes; her five great-great-grandchildren, with another one due in January; her sister, Mary Greiner of Zanesville; several nieces and nephews, and her furry companion, Chip.
In addition to her parents, Helen is preceded in death by her husband, Arndt Layman; her son, Jay Layman; her siblings, Bill Freeman, Aletha (Charles) Taylor, and Jean (Ray) Prouty; and her brother-in-law, K.R. Greiner.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the team at Shriver’s Hospice for their excellent care of Helen over the past several months, especially her aide, Kim.
