Herman Grady Powell
January 14, 1929 - December 4, 2025 (Age 96)
Rock Hill, SC – Herman Grady “Pete” Powell, age 95, entered his heavenly home surrounded by the love of his family on December 4th 2025. Born January 14, 1930, Pete lived a long and faithful life marked by devotion, service, and a gentle spirit that touched everyone who knew him.
Pete proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1948–1952. After his military service, he continued building a life rooted in family, faith, and steadfast dedication. He was one of the oldest charter members of Northside Baptist Church, where he had been faithfully attending since he was about nine years old. His presence there, marked by warmth, humility, and unwavering belief, will be deeply missed.
Pete was also known for his love of adventure especially on two wheels. A lifelong motorcycle enthusiast, he traveled on his bike all over the country, finding joy in the open road, new places, and the freedom of the ride. His stories from those trips were among his favorites to share, each one reflecting his curious spirit and love for life.
Pete was preceded in death by his parents, Grady Foy Powell and Josie Pearl Powell, his brothers Bernard and Dess Powell, his sister Rena Shaw and his great-grandson Trey Freeman.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 78 years, Mildred Shockley Powell, his lifelong partner and steadfast companion. Pete also leaves behind his daughters, Vicki Powell Thompson (Jerry) and Marlene Powell Lane (Gene), who were honored to call him Dad.
His legacy continues through his grandchildren Renee Thompson Hudson, Nikki Thompson Weissinger (Mike), Casey Anderson Rucker (David), and Dusty Thompson (Shannon), along with 13 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren and one more precious great-great-grandchild on the way. He is also survived by his sister, Annette Powell Jordan and his furry friend, Babydoll.
Pete Powell lived a life of quiet strength, deep faith, and immeasurable love for his family. His memories, stories, and the example he set will continue to guide those he leaves behind. Though he will be dearly missed, his legacy of kindness and faithfulness will live on for generations.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 9th 2025 from 6-8pm at 2296 Eden Terrance Ext, Rock Hill SC, 29730.
A Funeral Service will be held at Northside Baptist Church, 1140 Curtis Street, Rock Hill SC, 29730 on Wednesday, December 10th at 11:00 am with Reverend Jerry Devinney officiating. Interment will follow immediately after the service at Grandview Memorial Park – Cherry Road, 620 S. Cherry Road, Rock Hill, SC 29732.
