James O. Mackey
October 7, 1934 - February 4, 2025 (Age 90)
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of James "Jim" Mackey on February 4, 2025 who passed away at home surrounded by his children. Jim, born on October 7, 1934 to the late John Samuel Mackey and Rosa Harrison Mackey, was a man of immeasurable kindness and patience. His existence left an indelible impact on all who had the fortune of knowing him. Never one to utter a harsh word, Jim was a beacon of warmth and generosity.
Jim led a life of service and dedication, both to his country and his community. He served honorably in the US Army and was a long-standing member of the Masons. His leadership and enthusiasm were evidenced in his tenure as the former President of the Mecklenburg County Jaycees. Jim enjoyed the quietude of tennis and golf, finding peace and joy in the simplicity of the sports. He retired at age 73, yet his tireless spirit saw him working from home until he was 76. In true Jim fashion, as he committed to his wife, Jim was her caregiver up until the last two years when he no longer could.
He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 47 years, Sondra Harris Mackey, and their children, Brandon Mackey (Carol), Tammy Gordon (Ron), and Eban Mackey (Rose). Jim's legacy continues to thrive in his numerous grandchildren: Nicole Bigger (Marcus), Jordon Mackey, Keith Gordon (Catherine), Eban Mackey II, Meagan Bentinck (Sean), Brittani Mackey. Additionally his great grandchildren Tyson, Caroline, Grace, Olive, Arrow and Ophelia brought him great joy. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Ralph Mackey, and sister, Ruby Hobbs.
A funeral service to celebrate Jim's life and legacy will be held at 1:00 PM at McLean Funeral Directors Bumgardner Chapel in Belmont on Friday, February 7, 2025. Jim's final resting place will be at Sunset Memory Gardens, Mint Hill. The interment will be private.
