Jean H. Thompson

Jean Hawfield Thompson, 93, of Norwood passed away Tuesday evening, July 13, 2021 at Atrium Stanly.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm, Friday, July 16, 2021 at Big Lick Baptist Church in Oakboro. Rev. Jeff Springer and Rev. Bill Lang officiating. Interment will follow at 3:00PM, in Sunset Memory Gardens, 8901 Lawyers Road, Mint Hill, NC 28227. The family will receive friends Thursday evening, July 15, 2021 from 6:00pm until 8:00pm at Edwards Funeral Home in Norwood.

Mrs. Thompson was born December 14, 1927 in Raeford, NC to the late William Preston and Pauline Raper Hawfield. Jean graduated in 1949 from Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing. She worked in the newborn nursery at Presbyterian Hospital and Stanly Memorial Regional for several years. She was owner of Happy Hours Day Care in Charlotte for many years. Jean was very active in children, youth and senior adult ministries at her church. She loved children of all ages!

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Douglas Merritt York, Sr., James Erving Hill and Roy Banks Thompson; son, Douglas Merritt York, Jr., step-sons, James Erving Hill, Jr. and Boyce Eugene Thompson; brother, Houston Hawfield, William Hawfield and sister, Louise Lozier.

She is survived by her son, James Paul Hill (Ann) of Washington, NC; daughter, Claudia Hill Lang (Bill) of River View, FL; step-daughter, Gayle Hill Parks (Milton) of Port St. Lucie, FL and Brenda Thompson Ritchie of Albemarle; step daughter in law, Anna Thompson of Albemarle; eight grandchildren, 10 step grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
