Jerry Lee Tackett
October 30, 1945 - July 2, 2024 (Age 78)
Jerry Lee Tackett, 78, passed away on Tuesday, July 2, 2024. He was born on October 30, 1945, the second son of the late Chester and Jettie (Damron) Tackett. Jerry was raised up surrounded by the natural beauty of the Appalachian Mountains of Pike County, Kentucky, alongside his parents, siblings, and close, extended family.
Jerry had a kindness and curiosity about him from a young age. He loved his family, baseball and basketball, hunting and fishing, and any food he could get fresh from the garden, especially tomatoes and green beans. In the Kentucky hollows where he spent his youth, Jerry attended a first dance with a girl named Vivian Joyce Hall. Jerry would later tell stories about how after that dance he would look up at the stars at night from his neighboring hollow and wonder if Joyce was looking up at them at the same time. Jerry and Joyce would later marry, move to Columbus, Ohio, build their home and start their family. They welcomed and raised four boys together. Jerry was a devoted and loving father to his own children and a wonderful grandfather to his grandchildren. Jerry and Joyce celebrated 51 years of marriage together before her passing in 2020. They lived, laughed, and loved throughout their years together.
Jerry was an avid hunter and a spirited preacher. He had a sense of humor about him that had any around him in stitches. He was fair and good-natured, and he cared deeply about life and all those living it. Jerry loved the peace of the quiet mornings in the mountains where he would hunt, and he loved to watch sports, cheering on his Buckeyes, Bengals, and Wildcats, and otherwise “the team who hadn’t had a win in a while,” as he would say. Jerry worked for 3o years at General Motors where he was reliable and hardworking, making friends with, and earning the respect of, his co-workers.
One of Jerry’s proudest moments was when he was baptized and became a Christian. Jerry was a faithful member of the Church of Christ and his faith and belief in God was unwavering. He lived a Christian life and shared his love for the Lord with all he’d meet. Jerry would share the gospel beyond state lines, often using his vacation time to hold week-long meetings in multiple states. He shared the gospel with all he met, inviting any and everyone to church with him. Another of his proudest experiences was getting to share the gospel through the Londonderry Church of Christ, which he dedicated his resources, time, and energy to for over a decade, taking great joy in the fellowship with the community he came to know and love there.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Jettie (Damron) Tackett; sisters: Lorena Kendrick, Loretta Compton, Mary Flanary, and Gail Horn; and brothers: Edgar Tackett and Randall Tackett. Jerry is survived by his sons: Jeremy (Lana), Adam (Tommy), Matthew (Melissa), and Mark Tackett; his grandchildren Wesley, Emily, Justin, Hallie, Austin, Kennedy, Keegan, Angela, Kaylee, AJ, and Drake; his great grandson: Danny; his sibling Kathy (Ricky) Chaney; and a host of nieces, nephews, friends, and family to celebrate his life and mourn his passing.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, and funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 10, 2024 at the Myers-Woodyard Funeral Home in Groveport, Ohio. Burial will follow in the Franklin Hills Memory Gardens in Canal Winchester, Ohio, where he will be laid to rest beside his lifelong love, Joyce.
