Jimmy Nelson Baker

Jimmy Nelson Baker, age 88, of Monroe, North Carolina, stepped through Heaven’s Gates on August 18, 2026.
He was born on November 22, 1937, to the late Dock T and Hattie Baker.
Jimmy was a lifelong Union County native. He graduated from Indian Trail High School in 1956 and served as the Student Body President that same year. After graduating, Jimmy would later work in the textile industry where he eventually owned and operated his own textile business. Jimmy had many interests and enjoyments in his life including fishing. Most of all, Jimmy loved his family and enjoyed all the precious moments and memories he made with them. As a parent, Jimmy served as the PTA Treasurer at Indian Trail Elementary School and was also a longtime Baptist.
Along with his parents, Jimmy is preceded in death by his wife, Ellen of whom he had been married to for 50 years. He is also preceded in death by his brothers, Wayne, R.C., Gene, Aaron, and Smith Baker; sisters, Sara Baker, Louise McClain, Grace Riggins, Ruth Yarborough, Willie Eudy, Betty Pressley, and Dorothy Brooks. He is survived by his son, R. Nelson Baker (Paula); daughter, Sandra Benton Baker; grandchildren, Kristi Baker (Shannon), Michael Benton (Rochelle), Julie Baker (Scott), and Phillip Benton (Katie); 16 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great grandchildren.
A visitation will be held on Friday, August 28th from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at McEwen Funeral Service Mint Hill Chapel, located at 7428 Matthews-Mint Hill Rd., Mint Hill, North Carolina. A funeral service to celebrate Jimmy’s life will be held following the visitation at 1:00 pm with Pastor Marty Benfield officiating. Burial will immediately follow the service at Sunset Memory Gardens in Mint Hill, North Carolina.
