John R. Colling

October 3, 1942 - August 30, 2022 (Age 79)

John R. Colling, 79 of Zanesville, died 5:50 PM, Tuesday, August 30, 2022, at Genesis Morrison House Hospice, surrounded by his family. He was born Saturday, October 3, 1942, in Zanesville, the son of Roy W. Colling and Rhea J. (Hiles) Colling. He married Sherry (Burnworth) Colling on Saturday, April 18, 1987, and was a member of Brighton Presbyterian Church.

John served his country as a veteran of the United States Navy. Upon his return from the service, he worked at Brockway Glass for twenty years. He then joined Ohio Power/AEP retiring following twenty two years of service. After retirement, he also worked with McHugh’s driving cars.

John was a member of Lodge of Amity #5, F. & A. M. of Ohio, and a current member of Gage & Gavel Lodge #448, F. & A. M. He was a Life Member of the Amrou Grotto, where he served as a Past Monarch in 1998, and was Grotto Secretary for over twenty years. In recognition for his tireless service to the Grotto, John received the Secretary of the Year Award from the Supreme Council of Grottoes International.

John was an avid golfer, and was an official member of the Tee Jay’s Breakfast Club of Knowledge. John was a loving and caring husband, father, grandad and great grandad. He enjoyed the time he spent with his family. He was very active with his grandchildren attending all their activities and sporting events.

John is survived by his wife of the home, Sherry Colling; five children, Jenny (Joe) Sayles, Jeff Colling, Jay (Amanda) Colling, Wendy (Steve) Ashby, and Lori Hickman; grandchildren, Josh (Kelsey) Middleton, Justin (Lanae) Middleton, Jade Middleton, Jared Middleton, Jenna (Andrew) Moore, Jessica (Kyle Gentil) Middleton, Jacie (Jason Munyan) Middleton, Evan (Megan Sharier) Colling, Dr. Justin ( Dr. Morgan Torcasio) Thrush, Bethany Colling, Brooke Colling, Jordan Ashby, and Aaron (Kailey Felumlee) Ashby; great grandchildren, Kameron, Konner, Kace, Reid, Carter, Emmy, Addy, Cale, Delaney and Declan; nieces and nephew, Jodi, Buffy and Scott.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his sister, Janet (Harry) Workman.

Friends may call Tuesday, September 6, 2022, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, at the Hillis, Combs & Nestor Funeral Home 935 Forest Avenue, Zanesville, where Gage & Gavel Lodge and Amrou Grotto will conduct Masonic Funeral Services at 6:45 PM. Additional visitation will be held from 10:00 AM till 11:00 AM, Wednesday, September 7, 2022. Services will follow at 11:00 AM, with Chaplin Tim Patton officiating. Burial will follow in Zanesville Memorial Park with the United States Navy conducting Full Military Honors. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to an athletic booster of one’s choice.
