Jonathan Pierce

Jonathan George Pierce, age 90, passed away on July 11, 2026. He was born on May 2, 1936, in West Union, West Virginia, to Oris and Ruth Fox Pierce. He graduated from Doddridge County High School in 1955.

Jonathan was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Pierce. He is survived by his brother, James Pierce, and his family. He is also survived by his children, Kellie Gilbert and her husband, Robert; Cheray Holmes and her husband, Gary; and Jonathan Pierce II and his wife, Jennifer. His grandchildren include Heather Anderson and her husband, Matthew; Mark Prewett and his wife, Shawnee; Brent Holmes and his wife, Becky; Andrew Gilbert; Trinity Pierce and her boyfriend, Josh; and Nathan Pierce and his fiancée, Lindsay. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Evelyn Anderson, Lincoln Anderson, William Prewett, and Ashton Anderson.

Jonathan’s family and friends will remember him for his mischievous humor and playful pranks. Fishing was his favorite pastime, and it was one he shared with family and friends. He was always happy with a fish on the line, unless it was a catfish.

Jonathan enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1959 and served eleven years on active duty, followed by fourteen years in the Ohio National Guard. He retired in 1988 as a Master Sergeant and Supervisor of Supply Operations. After his military service, he worked in computer operations and retired in 1998 from American Electric Power as a security systems analyst.

He was a devoted member of First Baptist Church of Groveport, where he sang in the choir, served as treasurer and deacon, and participated in the Baptist Builders Association. Jonathan was also active in the Groveport Lions Club, where he previously served as president. He also volunteered with the City of Groveport’s Tree Committee.

Family and friends may visit from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 23, at Dwayne R. Spence Funeral Home, 650 W. Waterloo St., Canal Winchester, OH 43110. A second visitation will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 24th. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 24, at the funeral home, with visitation one hour prior. Interment will follow at Franklin Hills Memory Gardens. Those wishing to honor Jonathan’s memory are encouraged to donate to Pilot Dogs of Columbus, Pelotonia, or the Alzheimer’s Association in lieu of flowers.
