Karl D. “Skip” Smith, 89, of Punxsutawney, passed away Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at Penn Highlands Hospital, DuBois.

Born October 22, 1936, in Latrobe, he was the son of the late William A. Smith and Genevieve M. (Howell) Smith Wilt.

Skip was a 1954 graduate of Latrobe High School. A proud Navy veteran, he served his country during the Korean War. Prior to his retirement, he had been employed at Thatcher Glass, Owens Illinois, and Diamond Bathurst. An avid outdoorsman, Karl enjoyed hunting, fishing, farming, and riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle. He was also a loyal fan of the Pittsburgh sports teams.

In addition to his parents, Skip was preceded in death by his sister, Anna Marie Bollinger.

Skip is survived by his wife, Shirley A. (O’Barto) Smith, of Punxsutawney; one daughter, Karla D. Smith (Michael), of Greensburg; one son, Scott K. Smith (Debbie), of Greensburg; two step-children, Kathy Counce (Chris) of Tampa, FL, and Lee Nicomede (Stefanie) of Elmira, NY; two brothers, William A. Smith (Donna) of Latrobe and Richard M. Smith (Patricia) of Derry; seven grandchildren, Jodie L. Wrenn, Edward J. Wrenn (Shannon), Jessica Pollock, Joshua D. Smith (Jenny), Drew Smith, Zachary T. Smith (Petra), and Alexa A. Smith; 15 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will be received from 9am to Noon on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at Lopatich-Brinker Funeral Home, LLC, 601 Weldon Street, Latrobe. Members of the Latrobe Derry Veterans Honor Guard will conduct military services at 11:45 AM Saturday in the funeral home. A funeral liturgy will be held at Noon on Saturday in the funeral home with the Rev. E. George Saletrik officiating. Private interment will be at Westmoreland County Memorial Park, Greensburg. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the American Legion Post No. 981, 1301 Broad Street, Greensburg, PA 15601 or to the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System, VA Center for Development and Civic Engagement (118V-A), 1010 Delafield Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15215.
