Larry Dwight Frankenberry
December 10, 1943 - April 15, 2025 (Age 81)
Larry Dwight Frankenberry, 81, of Ridgeley, WV died April 15, 2025 at UPMC Western Maryland.
Larry was born on December 10, 1943 to James and Betty Frankenberry in Mount Savage, MD.
Larry was a loving husband to Linda for 55 years. He was kind-hearted and patient and taught his children the value of a hard day’s work. His collar was decidedly blue from the day he graduated from Mount Savage High School, starting at the Celanese in Cumberland and then O’Sullivan Corp. in Winchester, Va. In later years, he delivered candy and potato chips and worked in maintenance. He served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve.
His hard work wasn’t only for 9-to-5 hours. At home, Larry turned an old, red barn into a frightening haunted house for the neighborhood kids, and before long carloads of strangers were showing up every Halloween. He was a talented tinkerer and could fix anything. He built the sleekest soap box derby car from scratch and painted it bright orange. Few pinewood derby racers could keep up with his black No. 14.
Larry never turned down a game of catch or pickup basketball, and he mowed the baselines in the yard and built the hoop and painted the free-throw lines himself. He was a baseball and basketball coach and scout master. As a fan, he never missed a kids’ game - at home or on the road. He taught his kids (and the neighbors’ kids) how to fish, kept the baseball gloves oiled and kept the Flexible Flyer sleds slick. He often was the fastest down the hill.
When he retired he kicked his feet up and became “Pap.” He doted on his three grandsons, tossing them footballs and baseballs, challenging them to a race in the pool (they always won) and playing air hockey. He proudly marveled at their accomplishments with a “Gee, mon tee.”
Larry was predeceased by parents James and Betty Frankenberry and sisters-in-law Carolyn and Rita Frankenberry, and Deloris Jean Andrews.
Larry is survived by his wife Linda; children Jennifer (Fred Voss) and Jami (wife Rita); grandsons Michael (fiance Emma Mayne), William and Henry; brothers Roger and Jerry Frankenberry (wife Cassie); sister Carol Burkett (husband Bill); sister-in-law, Janet Jack; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, 2025 at Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Ave, Cumberland. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. officiated by Pastor David Hattenfield.
