Larry Hinkle

July 2, 1945 - September 23, 2022 (Age 77)

WILEY FORD – Larry Melton Hinkle, 77, a lifelong resident of Wiley Ford, passed away Friday, September 23, 2022 after a four-year battle with ALS.

Larry was born July 2, 1945, in Cumberland, Maryland, the son of the late John Russell Hinkle and Flossie Ashenfelter. He was a 1963 graduate of Ridgeley High School and following high school, proudly served in the Army Reserves. He retired from PPG Industries after 30 years. Larry loved to work and held many positions over the years in various jobs. He never had a job he didn’t like including serving as a Mineral County Sherriff Deputy, owning his own hardware store, delivering medical supplies at Bethesda Naval Hospital and working at O’Sullivan in Winchester, Virginia. Perhaps his favorite job was one he held post retirement working and caring for the farm property of Drs. Michael and Carol Grannett.

Larry enjoyed woodworking, tinkering in his garage and gardening, but his true passion was helping others. He was a member of the Wiley Ford Volunteer Fire Department for over 55 years and held positions of Chief, President and several others. He also worked with several other firemen to create a Community Hall and could be found at the fire hall every second Friday of the month making hoagies. He was a member of the Wiley Ford Church of Brethren for many years.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Darl W. Hinkle. He is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Marcia; two daughters, Lisa Orr (Randall) and Meredith Haines (John); and four grandchildren, Alexander and Elliott Orr and Bella and John Russell Haines. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Larry loved to spend time with his family and was very proud of each one of them. In turn, he gave them countless hours of joy and laughter by sharing stories in the way only he could. His family is especially grateful for the exceptional care he received over the last year from Cathy, Jeremiah, and Makayla, and Mountain Hospice.

A service will be conducted at the Wiley Ford Covenant Church of the Brethren on Friday, September 30, 2022 at 1pm with Pastor Phil Matthews officiating. Friends will be received at the church from noon to 1pm. Inurnment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens.

Donations in memory of Larry can be made to the Wiley Ford VFD, PO Box 11, Wiley Ford, WV 26767.
