Lawrence Baker Martin
June 8, 1936 - September 17, 2025 (Age 89)
Lawrence “Baker” Martin, a devoted husband, father, and man of unwavering faith, passed away peacefully on September 17, 2025, at the age of 89. He was a longtime resident of Mint Hill.
Born and raised in Chilhowie, Virginia, Baker graduated from Chilhowie High School in 1954 and went on to earn his degree from Emory and Henry College in 1958. His professional journey led him to a fulfilling career with the North Carolina Department of Transportation, where he served with dedication and integrity as the Area Appraiser for Division 10.
Baker’s life was defined by his steadfast commitment to God, family, and community. He was known for his wisdom, joyful spirit, and the warmth he brought to every room. Whether sharing a story, a joke, or a word of encouragement, Baker’s presence was a gift to those around him.
A faithful member and former deacon chairman of Hickory Grove Baptist Church, Baker also served on the board of the NC State Employees Credit Union in Matthews, NC. He earned the highest professional designation, as a MAI Appraiser, from the Appraisal Institute — recognizing his excellence and leadership in the field.
Baker found joy in life’s simple pleasures: reading, photography, and music—especially singing gospel hymns. But nothing brought him greater happiness than sharing life’s journey with his beloved wife, whom he affectionately called his “Sweet Caroline” and “Bride.” Together, they explored all 50 states and ventured beyond, creating a tapestry of memories that reflected their deep bond and love for family. Every mile traveled was a testament to his adventurous spirit and the unwavering devotion he held for the woman who was the heart of his world.
His grandchildren and great-grandchildren lovingly called him “Tie-Tie,” a nickname born from a sweet moment with his eldest grandson, James, who as a toddler would greet him at the door after work, pointing to his necktie and joyfully exclaiming, “Tie!”
Above all, Baker will be remembered for his deep devotion to the Lord, his enduring love for his wife and family, and his generous heart.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur T. Martin and Mabel C. Smeltzer; six siblings, including his cherished sister and brother-in-law, Marie and Elmer Rouse.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 69 years, Carolyn S. Martin; his children, Anthony Martin, Sarah Easter, and Laura Rushing (Brian); grandchildren, Januarie Eaves, James Martin (Katelyn), Michael Martin (Lexi), Elizabeth Blount (Travis), Anna Easter (John), Emma Rushing, and Avery Rushing; and nine great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Carolyn Boyce of Maryland.
A visitation will be held Friday, September 26, 2025, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at Hickory Grove Baptist Church Harris Campus Chapel, 7200 E W.T. Harris Boulevard in Charlotte, with a funeral service following at 11:00 am.
