Leroy Dolphus Kennedy
February 11, 1941 – September 23, 2026 (Age 85)
Mr. Leroy Dolphus Kennedy was born on February 11, 1941 in Fairfield County, South Carolina to the late Mattie Seals Kennedy & Wallace A. Kennedy, Sr. The family later moved to Charlotte, NC, where Leroy attended Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools, graduating from Second Ward High School in 1960. Leroy was united in holy matrimony to Nellie Ader, and to this union, five children were born: Debra, Dolphus (Buddy), Ricky, Ernest and Monique (Poody). Leroy was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Nellie, son (Ernie) and four siblings: Alvin, Mary Alice, Wallace Jr. and Barbara Ann. Leroy’s work career began at Kennedy & Son’s Garage. Later, he started a career at Hertz Equipment Company as a Small Engine
Repairman, then he became a Truck Driver. Leroy also worked at Bonded Warehouse, Schneider Trucking and J. B. Hunt Trucking Company, until retirement. Leroy was an ordained Deacon at Ebenezer Baptist Church under the pastorship of Dr. A. B. Sutton, Sr. He was also a Deacon and Trustee at his wife, Rev. Nelle Kennedy’s churches, Spirit of Deliverance Outreach Ministry, where she was Pastor and Founder.
Leroy was a proud, dedicated and active member in Masonic Grier Heights Lodge 752 for numerous years. He was also involved in the Second Ward High School Alumni. Leroy was a God-fearing family man, who loved cooking, entertaining and being surrounded by his family. One of his favorite pastimes was hanging out with his brothers watching high school football games on Friday nights. He also enjoyed fishing. Leroy’s health began to deteriorate after the passing of his soulmate, his wife, Nelle. Leroy leaves to cherish fondest memories and will be greatly missed by: his children, Debra ( Danny Wilson of Indian Trail, NC,
Dolphus (Queen) Kennedy of Charlotte, NC, Monique (Stanley) Thompson of Denver, NC and Ricky Kennedy of Charlotte, NC., as well as seven siblings: Rufus ( Sandra) Kennedy of Woodbridge, VA, Walter( Barbara) Kennedy of Charlotte, NC, Otis, Marjorie, and Melton Kennedy of Charlotte, Ruby (Prentice) Christian of Bowie, Maryland and Ted (Roberta) Kennedy of Mint Hill, NC., as well a (19) grandchildren, (18) great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
