December 28, 1941 – April 15, 2026 (Age 84)
Marie H. Merchant, age 84, of Charlotte, passed away peacefully on April 15, 2026, at Levine-Dickson Hospice House, surrounded by comfort and care. Born on December 28, 1941, in Charlotte, Marie was the beloved daughter of John and Wilma Harkey.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, John Owen Harkey.
Marie leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion through her cherished family. She is survived by her twin daughters, Gina Brown and Treva Sanderson, who were the center of her world. Even though they were divorced she stayed very close to her life friend Gary Merchant. In him she found safety and true love. She is also survived by her brother, Bob Harkey and his wife Eltie, her sister, Alice Cauble and her husband David and her late brother John's widow, Pat Harkey. Her memory will be forever treasured by her grandchildren, David Brown, Anna Brown, and Landon Sanderson. Completing her loving family circle is her devoted fur companion, Pandora.
Marie was a woman who lived many lives within her years—each one defined by love, sacrifice, and unwavering strength. She was a faithful employee of the United States Postal Service for over thirty years and upon retirement she ventured into the field of real estate. She adored her daughters and poured every part of herself into raising and supporting them and their families. Her life was a testament to selflessness; she gave freely of her time, her heart, and her resources, even when it meant going without herself.
Known for her boundless mercy and forgiveness, Marie never held onto bitterness, no matter the circumstances. She carried herself with quiet strength and dignity, rarely letting others see her burdens. To her family, she was a pillar—strong, fearless, and reassuring. She often reminded those she loved that no challenge was too great to overcome, and that somehow, everything would be alright—that they would make it through.
Marie’s legacy is one of unconditional love, resilience, and grace. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but her spirit and the lessons she instilled will live on in the hearts of her family for generations to come.
A graveside service will be held at Sunset Memory Gardens starting at 1:45 pm. The cemetery is located at 8901 Lawyers Rd, Mint Hill, NC 28227.
