Martha Geneva Riley

Martha Geneva (Shryock) Riley, 92, of Cumberland, formerly of Mexico Farms, MD, passed away on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at Allegany Health Nursing and Rehab.
Born August 23, 1932, in Flintstone, MD, she was the daughter of the late Delcie Bell Buser and Edward I. Shryock. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Dale Richard Riley, on May 13, 2025. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Luther “Pete” Shryock and wife Aletha “Tate”, Harry Shryock and wife Barbara; sister, Garland Athey; brothers-in-law, Robert “Bobby” Riley and wife Malda, Thomas “Tuck” Riley and wife Wanda; sisters-in-law, Mary Jane Phillips and husband Norman and Norma Shryock.
Martha began her working career at Fairchild in Hagerstown, MD. When she and Dale moved to Mexico Farms, she worked at Celanese. When Celanese closed, she babysat in her home. She then worked at Sacred Heart Hospital in housekeeping and retired from Daughters of Charity as the housekeeper for the Sisters.
She was a member of Davis Memorial Global Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She helped to make apple butter and started the Church’s Prayer Shawl Ministry.
Martha is survived by children, J. Dalene Vollmerhausen and husband Robert, Short Gap, WV, and Dale Richard Riley II and wife Jennifer, Cumberland; grandchildren, Corey Fair and wife Katlyn, Short Gap, Robert III “Bo” Vollmerhausen and fiancee Christina, Ridgecrest, CA, Phoebe and Jay Riley, Cumberland; great-granddaughter, Finnley Grace Fair, Short Gap; brother, Wakeman Shryock, Hagerstown; sister, Evelyn Appel and husband Gary, Oldtown; brothers-in-law, William Athey, Cumberland, Edward Riley and wife Janet, Roger Brown and wife Sheryl, all of Fort Ashby; sister-in-law, Carolyn “Kay” Riley, Short Gap; and many nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, in a joint service with Dale on Monday, May 19, 2025 from 11am to 1pm with the funeral service immediately following at 1pm with Pastor Quentin Simpson officiating.
Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Shaun Appel, Brent Simpson, Larry Wayne Shryock, Katlyn Fair, Chris Colaw, and Warren Portmess. Honorary pallbearer is Bo Vollmerhausen.
