Mary Grace Lewis

January 26, 1944 - October 30, 2024 (Age 80)

Mary Grace Lewis, 80, of Mint Hill, passed away on Wednesday, October 30, 2024. Through the blessing of hospice, she was able to be at home surrounded by family.

Mary was born in Mint Hill, NC, on January 26, 1944, one of nine children born to the late Earl and Lessie Wilson. She grew up in Mint Hill and later wrote letters to the Lonely-Hearts Club where she would meet the love of her life, James Junior Lewis. Mary and James were married in 1962, creating an everlasting bond with her serving as the foundation of the family. She imparted life values and countless lessons throughout her family, even down to her her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Later, she became a military wife and was married for 55 years before her husband died on October 30, 2017. In fact, though Mary had been diagnosed with cancer and was on hospice at the end, she fought against the cancer long enough to meet her goal - to go home to the Lord on the same day as her husband had 7 years earlier.

Mary was a hard worker, setting sleeves and making jeans in sewing houses before moving on to work for an envelope company. For a time, Mary even worked at an animal clinic before she and James owned their own cleaning business. Most of all, though, Mary loved taking care of her children and her husband.

Mary is survived by her four children: Nancy Ann Lewis (Bobby Hardee) of Mullins, SC; Jerry Junior Lewis of Mint Hill, NC; Larry James Lewis (Regina Lewis) of Charlotte, NC; and Opal Lewis Potter (Chris Potter) of Midland, NC. She is also survived by three siblings: Ellen Johnson (Marvin), Judy Gaston and Susie Mosley, her first cousin, Mary Ann Crowe; and numerous other cousins and family. She is further survived by seven grandchildren: Robert Horne, Kimberly Kusiak (Pete), Dustin Lewis, Jason Lewis, David Patton (Shell), Karen Lewis (Amanda) and Jenna Lewis; and five great grandchildren: Maxwell James Patton, Jonah, Penelope, Rosey and Timothy Kusiak.

In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by five siblings: Homer Wilson, Lonnie Wilson, Doris Wilson, Georgie Bailey and Bland Wilson.

Mary will be brought home to rest where all are invited to her viewing service from 6 to 9 pm on Saturday, November 2, and again from 6 to 9 pm on Sunday, November 3, at the family home, 6910 Oak Hill Road, Mint Hill. On Monday, November 4, a funeral service led by Pastor Rob Mariucci will take place at 11 AM at Mint Hill Baptist Church, 7835 Matthews-Mint Hill Road, Mint Hill.

Following the service, Mary will be taken in procession to her final place of earthly rest at Sunset Memory Gardens.
