Maurice W. Cary

December 11, 1932 - March 3, 2025 (Age 92)

We gather today in remembrance of a beloved soul whose life shone brightly as a guiding star. On the evening of March 3, 2025, Maurice Wendell Cary was called home to eternal rest, embraced by the angels of God. Born in Washington, DC, on December 11, 1932, he was the eldest of three children and was affectionately known as "Moe".

His parents, the late Thomas Richard Cary Jr. and Sarah Louise Compton Cary, nurtured the foundation of a life filled with purpose, passion, and an unwavering love for family, and community. His father later married Geraldine Johnson Cary, and his mother later married James Booth, each becoming cherished parts of his extended family.

Faith played a profound role in Moe's journey. A lifelong and devoted member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Washington, DC, he found joy in ensuring the church's upkeep and serving in any way he could. Whether through acts of service or moments of fellowship, his dedication to his spiritual home remained steadfast throughout his life.

His early education began at Carver Elementary School, followed by Armstrong Technical High School, both in Washington, DC.

With a keen intellect and a drive for excellence, Moe continued his studies at Hampton Institute, where he earned a degree in Engineering. During his time at Hampton, he formed lifelong friendships as a proud member of the Olympic Social Club, creating memories that often led him back to "3rd Street" in DC, a favorite gathering place for him and his friends.

A distinguished career spanned nearly three decades as a plant layout engineer at Westinghouse Electric Corporation in Sharon, PA, where he dedicated 28 years of service before retiring. His work later continued with the Department of Public Works in Washington, DC until retirement in 1995.

As an advocate for social justice, Moe was installed as Worshipful Master of Calumet Masonic Lodge 25, Prince Hall Affiliate of the Grand Lodge of Farrell, PA then joined the Harmony Masonic Lodge 22, when he returned to Washington, DC.

Moe found immense fulfillment in entertainment and the great outdoors. He enjoyed golfing, attending horse races, and sharing time with friends. After relocating to Rock Hill, SC, in 2008, he embraced a quieter life, tending to his garden, caring for his lawn with meticulous attention, and delighting in feeding birds from his deck. Moe's faith remained central to his life, and he became a devoted friend of Mt. Olive United Methodist Church in Rock Hill.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Elois Hope Cary; two sons, Quintin B. Cary (Lisa) and Dr. Maurice G. Cary (Mariena); daughter, Dr. Teré H. Dickson; brother, Alfonso W. Cary, Sr. (Veronica); brother-in-law, George Hope, Jr. (Brenda); daughter-in-law, Linda Bannerman; sister-in-law, Mildred Cary; thirteen grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren and a host of other loving relatives and friends.

Moe is predeceased by his parents; sister, Ada Cary-Cuffey; two brothers, Thomas R. Cary III and Stephen L. Cary; and son, Wendell J. Cary.

Moe's presence was a gift to all who knew him - his warmth, wisdom, and laughter left an indelible mark on the hearts of many. His legacy lives on in the love he shared, the lives he touched, and the memories he created.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to: Mt. Olive United Methodist Church 1222 Ogden Road, Rock Hill, SC 29730.
