Ralph Stewart Crump

April 27, 1936 - June 20, 2024 (Age 88)

Ralph Stewart Crump, 88, of Mint Hill, died Thursday, June 20, 2024, at the NC State Veterans Home in Salisbury, NC.

Ralph was born in Mecklenburg county on April 27, 1936, the son of Clyde and Ruth Rushing Crump. On June 17, 1953, he answered his country’s call to service and enlisted in the United States Army. After being stationed both domestically and in Germany, he was honorably discharged on May 31, 1956. He met his wife, Alta Faye in November, got married in January and they were blessed with their son, Dana, in October.

Upon his return to Charlotte, Ralph went to work as a Meat Inspector for A&P Warehouse on Hovis Road in Charlotte. After 33 years of service to A&P, they shut down and Ralph went into the lawn care business. He did that for about five years before getting one of the jobs he loved the most, joining the Maintenance Department for the Town of Mint Hill. He worked there for 8 years before finally retiring.

When not working, Ralph enjoyed the outdoors. Hunting, fishing, camping and traveling all over the East Coast were common activities for him. From NASCAR races to the mountains, he took in everything. Later in life, he enjoyed sitting with his wife in the sunroom of the home that they had built on Thompson Road, watching the deer and Ralph handling the squirrels that would raid his pecan tree. Even after the death of his wife in 2017, Ralph continued to spend time in that sunroom. What mattered most to Ralph, though, was his family. He loved to spend time with them and he will be sadly missed.

Ralph is survived by his son Dana (wife Sherry) Crump and his daughter, Penny Crump Nowotarski; a sister, Peggy Helms; four grandchildren: Bill, Crystal, Jessica and Jason; and six great grandchildren. He is further survived by numerous other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.

Ralph’s family has given the family of Lowe-Neddo Funeral Home the privilege of caring for him and for them. Graveside services with military honors will be held at 11 AM on Monday, June 24, at Sunset Memory Gardens, 8901 Lawyers Road, Charlotte.
