Richard R. Kellar
June 21, 1938 - February 26, 2025 (Age 86)
Richard R. Kellar, 86, died Wednesday, Feb. 26, at the Sanatoga Center where he had resided the past six years. He was predeceased in December, 2020, by his wife of 59 years, Thelma M. (March) Kellar.
Born in Pottstown, he was a son of the late Richard R. Kellar Sr. and Lois F. (Buchanan) Kellar.
A 1957 graduate of Owen J. Roberts High School, he worked for a time at The New York Store in Pottstown where he met his future wife Thelma.
He went on to become a licensed practical nurse and worked in nursing for 30 years at the former Parkhouse Center, former Valley Forge General Hospital, and Coatesville VA Medical Center.
Richard and Thelma lived in Pottstown before moving together to Sanatoga Center in 2019. They were never apart, enjoying time together, including many trips in the eastern U.S. and to Branson, Mo. Siblings and their numerous nieces and nephews were important to Richard and Thelma, especially at holiday celebrations, which they never missed.
He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church and lifetime member of The Pottstown German Club. He was also a member of the Pottstown Elks Lodge #814, Upper Pottsgrove Township Fire Company, and the New Hanover Chapter of AARP, where he served as president.
Richard was liked by all who knew him, and he was active and frequently held leadership roles in the organizations to which he belonged. At the time of his death, he had been serving as the elected president of the floor residents’ council at Sanatoga Center.
Surviving are a sister, Shirley Lloyd of Silver Spring, Md., and her two daughters, Donna Phelps and Paula Almeda and son Chris Lloyd. He is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Carol Cocci, of North Coventry; Bonnie Brandel, Pottstown, and four brothers-in-law, E. William March, Douglassville; Robert March, Scottsdale, AZ; Rod Hostetler, Audubon, and Raymond Cocci, Philadelphia, plus numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, Enos H. Kellar.
A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 3, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, located at Hanover and Walnut Streets in Pottstown, with the Rev. Dr. Carl W. Filer, pastor, officiating. A luncheon will follow immediately at the church, and all are invited to attend. Houck & Gofus Funeral Home, 955 N. Charlotte St., Pottstown, is handling the arrangements.
