Ruth E. Sharrer

Ruth Sharrer passed away peacefully at the Helen Purcell Home Friday December 9, 2022, surrounded by her family. She was born September 1941 in Marietta Ohio to the late George H. and Hilda Stauch Walters. She was a graduate of Marietta High School and Marietta College. She held a Master’s degree in Education.

She was a busy person, giving person, a teacher at Grover Cleveland Middle School for over 30 years, a cheerleading advisor, a member of the Delta Kapa Gamma, Zanesville City Schools Spelling Bee host, Olympic of the Minds (OM) and a book club advisor. She also produced a ninth grade play. She was also a member of the National Teachers of English/Ohio Council of Teachers of English and held many offices.

Ruth loved to teach and she was well travelled. But her favorite place was the library, where she took all the grandchildren to programs every summer.

She was a loving and involved grandmother helping with teaching, pageants, dance recitals, school programs and ball games. Ruth always enjoyed getting together with her two brothers and their families, decorating graves and catching up on their lives.

She was a Ohio State Buckeye fan, who never missed a game and was an avid card player, skilled seamstress and a host for the Miss Southeastern Ohio Pageant.

She is survived by a son John (Lynn) Sharrer; a daughter in law Cheryl Sharrer; two brothers: Earl (Charlotte) Walters and Gary (Shelly) Walters; grandchildren: Amy (Mark) Johnson, Lori Sharrer, Meagan (Michael) Mays, Taylor (Jessica) Sharrer, Drew (Tashia) Sharrer, Jordan (Brandi) Sharrer and Charlie (Tabitha) Ansel; great grandchildren: Lilly, Laney, Lyla, Emory, Grayson, Mollie, Quincy and Ali, who she took pride and joy in the rearing of; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Ralph Sharrer; children: Debbie Ansel and Dean Sharrer; a brother George Walters Jr. and a sister Mary Ilene Walters.

Calling hours will be 11AM to 12PM, Wednesday, December 14, 2022, at THE SNOUFFER FUNERAL HOME, 1150 WEST MILITARY ROAD, ZANESVILLE, OH 43701. The funeral service will begin at 12PM in the Snouffer Chapel with Chaplain Tim Patton officiating. Burial will follow in Zanesville Memorial Park.
