Sammie Lee Poage, Jr., 59, of Rock Hill, SC, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2024. Born on December 16, 1964, in Jacksonville, FL, Sammie, also known as "Jab," was a beloved son, father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, and friend who touched the lives of many with his kindness and generosity.
Sammie grew up in Rock Hill, SC, where he developed a love for the Dallas Cowboys, fishing, playing spades, Duke basketball, bowling, grilling, and cornhole. He attended Rock Hill High School and was part of the Class of 1983. Recently, Sammie became a University of Utah football fan because his nephew Sammie Hunter is on the team, and he was often seen with his red Utah shirt on.
Sammie is survived by his loving parents, Sammie Lee Poage Sr. and Patricia Louise Poage; his cherished children, Cody Person, Demario Faulkner, Daisha Poage, Destinee Poage, and Sammie Lee Poage III; his treasured grandchildren, Justice, Jaelin, Demario Jr., Kamryn, Xavier, Kaiden, Carson, Kylir, and Amir; his dear sisters, Mina Poage Watkins, Tonya Poage (Clarence Peele), and Dr. Jackie Poage Hunter; his brother-in-law, Dr. Wes Hunter; his daughter-in-law, Brittany Faulkner; his caring girlfriend, Rikita Boston; his adored nieces and nephews, LaQuasha Watkins, Mark Watkins Jr., Brandi Poage Sanders, Nikki Poage, Makayla Hunter, Sammie Hunter, and Camryn Hunter; his loving aunts, Ola Poage Rawlinson and Wilean Poage Wilkes; and his uncles, Harvey Lee Poage Jr., Jim Poage, and Theodore Davis Jr. He was proud of his children and grandchildren and loved spending time with his grandkids, who knew him as Paw Paw. Sammie also loved his dogs Blaze and Phoenix, playing spades, and he cherished his extended family. Sammie was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Theodore Davis Sr. and Mabel Davis Talley, and his paternal grandparents, Harvey Lee Poage Sr. and Cleola Poage.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, July 13, at Parker Funeral Home, 620 Saluda Road, Rock Hill, SC 29730, from 4-6 p.m.
A celebration of Sammie’s life will be held on July 14 at 1 p.m. at Foundation A.M.E. Zion Church, 1852 Neely Store Road, Rock Hill, SC 29730, with repass to follow immediately after at the church. Family and friends are invited to attend and share their memories.
Burial will be at Grandview Memorial, 620 S Cherry Rd, Rock Hill, SC 29730, on July 15 at 11 a.m.
