Stephan Charles Hannah, lovingly known as Steve, passed away peacefully on January 8, 2025, surrounded by his cherished family.
Steve was born on April 2nd, 1950, in Hamilton, Ohio, to Curtis and Geraldine Hannah, Steve grew up in Fairfield, Ohio, just outside Cincinnati. This is where he cultivated his love for sports, particularly baseball and football.
During his high school years, Steve excelled on the football field as a standout offensive lineman, playing center. His talent earned him multiple scholarship offers, and he chose to attend Wittenberg University, a prestigious private liberal arts institution in Springfield, Ohio. At Wittenberg, Steve played as the starting center for several years while pursuing his degree in Physical Education. It was there that he met the love of his life, Winifred Susan Hamilton, who shared his passion for physical education. Their relationship blossomed, and the two were married in 1973.
Steve and Winifred built a life together in Springfield, Ohio, where they purchased a home and began their family. They welcomed their daughter, Kimberly Susan Hannah, on August 31st, 1978, and their son, Kristopher Stephan Hannah, on August 20th, 1984.
Steve dedicated his career to the newspaper industry, starting with the Springfield News and Sun in Springfield, Ohio. In 1990, he moved his family to Charlotte, North Carolina, to take a position with The Charlotte Observer, where he worked until his retirement. Throughout his life, Steve was a devoted husband and father, always prioritizing the well-being of his family and ensuring they were well cared for.
Steve’s favorite places were the Smoky Mountains and the beach, where he found peace and joy with his loved ones. He will be remembered for his unwavering love for his wife, affectionately known as Sugar, and his children, Kim and Kris, who were the center of his world.
Steve is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Sugar, age 75; his daughter, Kim, age 46; and his son, Kris, age 40.
Steve will be deeply missed and fondly remembered for the love and legacy he leaves behind.
The family will receive friends on Monday, January 20, 2025 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at McEwen Funeral Service-Mint Hill Chapel, 7428 Matthews-Mint Hill Road, Mint Hill, NC 28227, followed by a memorial service at 12:00 PM.
