William Edward Strait
May 19, 1935 - May 30, 2025 (Age 90)
Rock Hill, SC – William Edward (Bill) Strait passed away peacefully at the age of 90 on Friday, May 30, 2025. Born on May 19, 1935, Bill was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend whose steady presence and kind heart left an enduring mark on all who knew him.
Bill was married to the love of his life, Sylvia, for 70 wonderful years. Their marriage was a testament to a lifelong commitment, built on love, faith, and mutual respect. Together, they raised a loving family and created a home filled with warmth and laughter.
In the 1960’s, Bill served his community as an officer with the Rock Hill Police Department. Following his time in law enforcement, he continued his career with Celanese Corporation, where he worked diligently until his retirement in 1997. A skilled craftsman, Bill shared his knowledge with others by teaching welding and sheet metal layout at York Technical College. His passion for working with his hands led him to establish his own business, Strait Sheet Metal, where he fabricated ductwork for several local HVAC contractors.
Bill proudly served in the Army National Guard in the late 1950’s, honoring his country with the same sense of duty and dedication he brought to every aspect of his life. A man of deep faith, Bill was a charter member of Lakewood Baptist Church where he served faithfully as a deacon and usher for over 50 years. Outside his work and service, Bill found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved spending time with his family and friends, camping, fishing, and perhaps most of all, working in his beloved workshop where his creativity and craftsmanship truly shined. Bill leaves behind a legacy of hard work and unwavering devotion to his family and faith. He will be missed by all who had the privilege to know and love him.
Bill is preceded in death by his beloved wife Sylvia. He is survived by his daughter, Lee Strait; his son, William Edward (Eddie) Strait Jr. (Christy); his granddaughter, Ashley Strait Purser (Robert); and great-granddaughter, Blythe Purser.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice and Community Care of Rock Hill.
