William Errol Salzman
January 31, 1939 - September 5, 2024 (Age 85)
William Errol “Bill” Salzman, 85, born January 31, 1939, departed this earthly realm on September 5, 2024, on a journey to make his way to the house of his Father. He was born on the family farm in Goodhue County, Minnesota, to the late Harold Virgil Salzman, Sr. and Matilda Rotter Salzman. Bill resided on the farm until his graduation from Cannon Falls High School in 1957.
After graduation, Bill joined the United States Coast Guard and was stationed at Pearl Harbor on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. This is where he met his wife of 63 years, Barbara (Arves) Salzman.
After his military tour, Bill and Barbara moved back to Bill’s home state of Minnesota and resided in Northfield, where they raised their family of three children, Russell (Lyanne) Salzman of Stewartville, MN, Wendy (Jeff) Beem of Zanesville, OH, and Brian Salzman of Minneapolis, MN.
Bill spent his working career at the Brockway Glass, Co. in Rosemount, MN in the managerial department, and then later at the Zanesville, OH plant where he and Barbara have resided for the last forty years.
Bill was an avid hunter and fisherman while residing in Northfield. The owner of the local hardware store commissioned him to make his unique and successful fly fishing lures, which were packaged and sold at the hardware store.
Bill loved firearms. He, his older brother, Gary and his two grandsons participated in the cowboy shooting competitions together all over Ohio, and he also competed in military combat competitions. He assisted his grandson’s Boy Scout leader and thoroughly enjoyed their summer and fall camping expeditions. Bill became interested in art. After receiving a starter artist’s paint kit as a gift from his daughter and son-in-law, Jeff, and Bill developed a passion for landscape painting. Bill would travel to different art galleries around Ohio where his works were on display.
Bill found joy in little things. It could simply be tearing open the wrapping paper of a small gift, or the pleasure of enjoying an afternoon cup of strong black coffee and a piece of Barb’s homemade dessert. And, of course, a cigarette to follow.
Evening hours for Bill were spent reading a good book. He especially preferred true survival stories. The final book he read before his eyesight failed him was the Bible. It took Bill approximately a year to finish reading it. He mentioned to his daughter that it was the most interesting book he had ever read, that it held something for everyone; romance, intrigue, mystery, war, betrayal, lessons, everything. Bill was Lutheran by faith.
In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by two brothers, Gary (Arlene) Salzman of Las Vegas, NV and Jim (Sherry) Salzman of Denver, CO, and his sister, Joanne (Roger) Holmes.
Bill is survived by his wife of over 63 years, Barbara Salzman; one brother, Harold Virgil (Barbara) Salzman, Jr. of Laurel, MT; his grandson, Cody (Kaitlyn) Beem of Nashport, OH, Wesley Beem of Zanesville, OH; granddaughters, Julie Omalza of Dundas, MN, Ranndi Salzman of Portland, OR, Cydney Salzman of Waterville, MN and Angel (Carlos) Aguado of Dallas, TX. Bill has four great-grandsons, Nathaniel Omalza and Jackson Omalza both of Dundas, MN, Mateo Aquado and Jordi Aquado both of Dallas, TX.
Private Family Services have been held and Public Graveside Service will be held 11:00 AM, Tuesday, September 10, 2024, at Zanesville Memorial Park, 1474 Military Road, Zanesville, OH, with Rev. Darren Tolbert officiating. Full Military Honors will be conducted by the United States Coast Guard and VFW Post 1058.
